There are indications, however, that the old customs are coming back.Accordingto thelatest CASAreports,59%of surveyed families said they ate dinner together at least five timesa week,a significantincreasefrom 47% in 1998. Whatever drives this trend, it is adevelopment thatshouldbewelcomed.

Eating together as a family is not just about food and nutrition. It isabout teaching themhowtobecomemembers of their society and culture. Food has become so easily andcheaplyavailablethatwenolongerappreciate itssignificance.We have to rediscover itsimportanceand itsvalue.Sharingamealwithlovedones should be considered a special event, whichcan almosttake on the form ofaceremony,asitwaspracticedbyourancestorsforwhomfinding food wasa constant struggle.

Of course, there is no guarantee that the simple act of eating at home surrounded byfamilymaymakechildrenmorevirtuous or socially more responsible.Butitcanlaythegroundwork fora lot of things thatpointthem in the right direction.
