Researchersdidtwostudiestoexplorewhetherexperiencesrelatedtopsychologicalneedsinwakinglifearerelatedtothedeeperlevelofprocessingthatdreamsprovide.

Inthefirststudy,200peoplewereaskedtothinkabouttheirmostcommonrecurringdream.Thesecondstudyanalyzedthenotesthat110peoplemadeoveraperiodofthreedaysintheir“dreamdiaries”.Theresultsfrombothshowthatemotionsrelatedtopsychologicalneedsinfluencethethemesthatwillappearinpeople'sdreams.Participantswhoseso-calledpsychologicalneedswerenotmetreportedhavingmorenightmares.

Anumberofrecurringthemesseemtoturnupbychanceduringdisturbing(令人不安的)dreams.Thesemayincludebeingtrapped,attacked,orfailingatanimportanttask.Earlierresearchhasrecognizedwhatsomeofthesedreamsmightmean.Forexample,peoplewhofeelannoyedwiththeirdailylivestendtohaverecurringdreamsinwhichtheyarefalling,failingorbeingattacked.Those
