Itseemsnot.Thebodyisaculturalfact.Now,inanyculturewhatsoever,themodeoforganizationoftherelationtothebodyreflectsthemodeoforganizationoftherelationtothingsandofsocialrelations.Inacapitalistsociety,thegeneralstatusofprivatepropertyappliesalsotothebody,tothewayweoperatesociallywithitandthementalrepresentationwehaveofit.Inthetraditionalorder--inthecaseofthepeasant,forexample--therewasnonarcissisticinvestmentorspectacularperceptionofhisbody,butaninstrumental/magicalvision,inducedbythelabourprocessandtherelationtonature.

Whatwewanttoshowisthatthecurrentstructuresofproduction/consumptioninduceinthesubjectadualpractice,linkedtoasplit(butprofoundlyinterdependent)representationofhis/herownbody:

therepresentationofthebodyascapitalandasfetish(orconsumerobject).Inbothcases,itisimportantthat,farfromthebodybeingdeniedorleftoutofaccount,thereisdeliberateinvestmentinit(inthetwosenses,economicandpsychical,oftheterm).

AfineexampleofthismanagedreappropriationofthebodyisprovidedbyElle,inanarticleentitled`Thesecretkeystoyourbodywhichunlockthedoortocomplex-freeliving'.

FunctionalBeauty

身体异化的突出表现是其功用性特征。

其中美丽和色情是两个核心主题。

美丽既不是自然的效果,也和道德品质无关。

但是,对于女性来说,它却是绝对命令,因为它是“交换着的符号的一种材料,它是作为价值/符号运作着的”,它是资本的一种形式。

因为身体在这里发生了一种蜕变——从具体价值、使用价值向功用性交换价值的蜕变。

而作为另一个功用性主题的色情,其在消费社会中的一个典型特征则是交换的普遍化,它与本来意义上的性欲是具有明显不同的。

“在身体/冲动、身体,幻觉中占主导地位的是欲望的个体结构。

而在‘色情化’的身体中,起主导地位的则是交换的社会功能。
