Forexample,therearecurrentlyover3,000languagesspokenthroughoutAfrica.Thissoundsimpressiveuntilyourealizethattherewereover10,000languagesspokenonthecontinentbeforecolonizationduringthe19thcentury.

“Peoplewholosetheirlanguageexperiencesuffering,”saidOlenkaBilash,professorofsecondlanguageeducationattheUniversityofAlberta.Bilashlikenedthelossoflanguagetothelossofculturalidentity.

“Asamulticulturalsociety,itisveryimportanttocontinuetopreserveandpassontofuturegenerationsthelanguage,culture,traditionsandcustomsthatwebringtoCanada,”saidIHLApresidentOlgaProkhorova.

WhiletheCityofEdmonton’scitizenandnewarrivalcentreincityhallprovidesservicesin150languages,Bilashsaidresearchshowsthat“mostpeoplearestilluncomfortablespeakingtheirownlanguageinpublicspaces.”
