Asite-to-siteVPNiscreatedwhenconnectiondevicesonbothsidesoftheVPNconnectionareawareoftheVPNconfigurationinadvance.TheVPNremainsstatic,andinternalhostshavenoknowledgethataVPNexists.FrameRelay,ATM,GRE,andMPLSVPNsareexamplesofsite-to-siteVPNs.
Aremote-accessVPNiscreatedwhenVPNinformationisnotstaticallysetup,butinsteadallowsfordynamicallychanginginformationandcanbeenabledanddisabled.ConsideratelecommuterwhoneedsVPNaccesstocorporatedataovertheInternet.ThetelecommuterdoesnotnecessarilyhavetheVPNconnectionsetupatalltimes.Thetelecommuter'sPCisresponsibleforestablishingtheVPN.TheinformationrequiredtoestablishtheVPNconnection,suchastheIPaddressofthetelecommuter,changesdynamicallydependingonthelocationofthetelecommuter.
