It'sclearthateveryoneneedstosleep.Mostpeoplerarelythinkabouthoworwhytheysleephowever.Weknowthatifwesleepwellwefeelrested.Ifwedon'tsleepenough,weoftenfeeltiredandirritable.Itseemsthattherearetwopurposesofsleep:

physicalrestandemotionalorpsychologicalrest.Weneedtorestourbodiesandourminds.Bothareimportantinorderforustobehealthy.

Eachnightwealternatebetweentwokindsofsleep:

activesleepandpassivesleep.Thepassivesleepgivesourbodytherestthatisneededandpreparesusforactivesleepinwhichdreamingoccurs.Andwearebeginningtounderstandtheimportanceofthedreamstageinoursleepcycles.

Let'slookatthedifferenthindsofsleep.They'requitedifferent.Inpassivesleep,thebodyisatrest.Theheartslowsdown.Thebodyprocessesbecomeveryslow.Wemoveverylittle.Andthebrainbecomesveryinactive.Thisstageofsleepisknownasslow-wavesleepbecausethebrainwavesmoveinaveryslowregularrhythm.

Ifapersoncontinuestosleep,sheorheentersanewstage,amoreactivestage.Thebodygoesthroughseveralchanges:

thebraintemperaturerises,theamountofbloodinthebrainincreases,thebodybecomesvery,verystill,andthebraingoesfrombeingveryinactivetobeingactive.Andasthebrainbecomesmoreactive,theeyesbegintomoverapidly.Whentheeyesbegintomove,thisisasignofanotherchange--thechangeisthatthepersonisdreaming.,
