    IreneenteredtheUniversityofParisin1914toprepareforadegreeinmathematicsandphysics.WhenWorldWarIbegan, Irenewenttohelphermother, whowasusingX﹣rayfacilities(设备)tohelpsavethelivesofwoundedsoldiers.IrenecontinuedtheworkbydevelopingX﹣rayfacilitiesinmilitaryhospitalsinFranceandBelgium.HerserviceswererecognisedintheformofaMilitary’sMedalbytheFrenchgovernment.

    In 1918, Irenebecamehermother’sassistantattheCurieInstitute.InDecember1924, FredericJoliotjoinedtheInstitute, andIrenetaughthimthetechniquesrequiredforhiswork.Theysoonfellinloveandweremarriedin1926.TheirdaughterHelenewasbornin1927andtheirsonPierrefiveyearslater.
