In1950,whenplasticwasfirstmassproduced,thereportfound2mtonneswasmanufactured.Thatfigurehasrisento8.3bnin2017andisprojectedtoreach34bnby2050.“Weareonthisenormousgrowthpath–thereisnoendinsightoftherateofthisgrowth,”saidGeyer.Headdedthatevenacademicswhoworkedinthesamefieldwereunawareofthe“sheerdimensions”ofthecrisis.

“Combinedwiththishugegrowthrateitmakesmeveryconcerned.Weshouldlookatthenumbersandaskasasociety,isthiswhatwewant,canwenotdobetter?

Tovisualizethescaleoftheproblem,Geyersaidhehadcarriedouta“thoughtexperiment”.“Ifyoutakethe8.3bntonnesofplasticandspreaditoutasankledeepwaste–about10incheshigh–IcalculatedIcouldcoveranareathesizeofArgentinawithit.Thatistheworld’seighthlargestcountry.”

Geyersaid:

“Whatwearetryingtodoistocreatethefoundationforsustainablematerialsmanagement.Putitsimply,youcan’tmanagewhatyoudon’tmeasure,andsowethinkpolicydiscussionswillbemoreinformedandfactbasednowthatwehavethesenumbers.”
