itstheanswerthatledthosewhohavebeentoldforsolongbysomanytobecynical,andfearful,anddoubtfulofwhatwecanachievetoputtheirhandsonthearcofhistoryandbenditoncemoretowardthehopeofabetterday.

ijustreceivedaverygraciouscallfromsenatormccain.hefoughtlongandhardinthiscampaign,andhesfoughtevenlongerandharderforthecountryheloves.hehasenduredsacrificesforamericathatmostofuscannotbegintoimagine,andwearebetterofffortheservicerenderedbythisbraveandselflessleader.icongratulatehimandgovernorpalinforalltheyhaveachieved,andilookforwardtoworkingwiththemtorenewthisnationspromiseinthemonthsahead.

iwanttothankmypartnerinthisjourney,amanwhocampaignedfromhisheartandspokeforthemenandwomenhegrewupwithonthestreetsofscrantonandrodewithonthattrainhometodelaware,thevicepresident-electoftheunitedstates,joebiden.

iwouldnotbestandingheretonightwithouttheunyieldingsupportofmybest

friendforthelastsixteenyears,therockofourfamilyandtheloveofmylife,ournationsnextfirstlady,michelleobama.sashaandmalia,iloveyoubothsomuch,andyouhaveearnedthenewpuppythatscomingwithustothewhitehouse.andwhileshesnolongerwithus,iknowmygrandmotheriswatching,alongwiththefamilythatmademewhoiam.imissthemtonight,andknowthatmydebttothemisbeyondmeasure.

iwasneverthelikeliestcandidateforthisoffice.wedidntstartwithmuchmoneyormanyendorsements.ourcampaignwasnothatchedinthehallsofwashington-itbeganinthebackyardsofdesmoinesandthelivingroomsofconcordandthefrontporchesofcharleston.

itwasbuiltbyworkingmenandwomenwhodugintowhatlittlesavingstheyhadtogivefivedollarsandtendollarsandtwentydollarstothiscause.itgrewstrengthfromtheyoungpeoplewhorejectedthemythoftheirgenerationsapathy;wholefttheirhomesandtheirfamiliesforjobsthatofferedlittlepayandlesssleep;fromthenot-so-youngpeoplewhobravedthebittercoldandscorchingheattoknockonthedoorsofperfectstrangers;fromthemillionsofamericanswhovolunteered,andorganized,andprovedthatmorethantwocenturieslater,agovernmentofthepeople,bythepeopleandforthepeoplehasnotperishedfromthisearth.thisisyourvictory.

iknowyoudidntdothisjusttowinanelectionandiknowyoudidntdoitforme.youdiditbecauseyouunderstandtheenormityofthetaskthatliesahead.forevenaswecelebratetonight,weknowthechallengesthattomorrowwillbringarethegreatestofourlifetime-twowars,aplanetinperil,theworstfinancialcrisisinacentury.evenaswestandheretonight,weknowtherearebraveamericanswakingupinthedesertsofiraqandthemountainsofafghanistantorisktheirlivesforus.

therearemothersandfatherswhowilllieawakeaftertheirchildrenfallasleepandwonderhowtheyllmakethemortgage,orpaytheirdoctorsbills,orsaveenoughforcollege.thereisnewenergytoharnessandnewjobstobecreated;newschoolstobuildandthreatstomeetandalliancestorepair.

theroadaheadwillbelong.ourclimbwillbesteep.wemaynotgetthereinoneyearorevenoneterm,butamerica-ihaveneverbeenmorehopefulthaniamtonightthatwewillgetthere.ipromiseyou-weasapeoplewillgetthere.

therewillbesetbacksandfalsestarts.therearemanywhowontagreewitheverydecisionorpolicyimakeaspresident,andweknowthatgovernmentcantsolveeveryproblem.butiwillalwaysbehonestwithyouaboutthechallengesweface.iwilllistentoyou,especiallywhenwedisagree.andaboveall,iwillaskyoujoinintheworkofremakingthisnationtheonlywayitsbeendoneinamericafortwo-hundredandtwenty-oneyears-blockbyblock,brickbybrick,callousedhandbycallousedhand.

whatbegantwenty-onemonthsagointhedepthsofwintermustnotendonthisautumnnight.thisvictoryaloneisnotthechangeweseek-itisonlythechanceforustomakethatchange.andthatcannothappenifwegobacktothewaythingswere.itcannothappenwithoutyou.

soletussummonanewspiritofpatriotism;ofserviceandresponsibilitywhereeachofusresolvestopitchinandworkharderandlookafternotonlyourselves,buteachother.letusrememberthatifthisfinancialcrisistaughtusanything,itsthatwecannothaveathrivingwallstreetwhilemainstreetsuffers-inthiscountry,weriseorfallasonenation;asonepeople.

letusresistthetemptationtofallbackonthesamepartisanshipandpettinessandimmaturitythathaspoisonedourpoliticsforsolong.letusrememberthatitwasamanfromthisstatewhofirstcarriedthebanneroftherepublicanpartytothewhitehouse-apartyfoundedonthevaluesofself-reliance,individualliberty,andnationalunity.thosearevaluesweallshare,andwhilethedemocraticpartyhaswonagreatvictorytonight,wedosowithameasureofhumilityanddeterminationtohealthe

dividesthathaveheldbackourprogress.aslincolnsaidtoanationfarmoredividedthanours,wearenotenemies,butfriends...thoughpassionmayhavestraineditmustnotbreakourbondsofaffection.andtothoseamericanswhosesupportihaveyettoearn-imaynothavewonyourvote,butihearyourvoices,ineedyourhelp,andiwillbeyourpresidenttoo.

andtoallthosewatchingtonightfrombeyondourshores,fromparliamentsandpalacestothosewhoarehuddledaroundradiosintheforgottencornersofourworld-ourstoriesaresingular,butourdestinyisshared,andanewdawnofamericanleadershipisathand.tothosewhowouldtearthisworlddown-wewilldefeatyou.tothosewhoseekpeaceandsecurity-wesupportyou.andtoallthosewhohavewonderedifamericasbeaconstillburnsasbright-tonightweprovedoncemorethatthetruestrengthofournationcomesnotfromourthemightofourarmsorthescaleofourwealth,butfromtheenduringpowerofourideals:

democracy,liberty,opportunity,andunyieldinghope.

forthatisthetruegeniusofamerica-thatamericacanchange.ourunioncanbeperfected.andwhatwehavealreadyachievedgivesushopeforwhatwecanandmustachievetomorrow.

thiselectionhadmanyfirstsandmanystoriesthatwillbetoldforgenerations.butonethatsonmymindtonightisaboutawomanwhocastherballotinatlanta.shesalotlikethemillionsofotherswhostoodinlinetomaketheirvoiceheardinthiselectionexceptforonething-annnixoncooperis106yearsold.

shewasbornjustagenerationpastslavery;atimewhentherewerenocarsontheroadorplanesinthesky;whensomeonelikehercouldntvotefortworeasons-becauseshewasawomanandbecauseofthecolorofherskin.

andtonight,ithinkaboutallthatshesseenthroughouthercenturyinamerica-theheartacheandthehope;thestruggleandtheprogress;thetimesweweretoldthatwecant,andthepeoplewhopressedonwiththatamericancreed:
