Abstract

DuringthePressConferencesheldduringNPCandCPPCC,thespeakerwouldoftenquoteexpressionsheavilyloadedwithChineseculturalcharacteristics,includingancientChinesepoems,proverbs,allusionsandthelike.Itisachallengetoallinterpreterstointerpretthemwellsoastomaketheaudienceunderstandthemwithoutthelossoftheiroriginalbeautyatthesametime.

Thisthesiswillanalyzethecultural-embeddedexpressions,includingtheancientChinesepoemsandwordsandexpressionswithChinesecharacteristics.Besides,thestrategiesusedininterpretation,likeliteraltranslation,literaltranslationplusexplanation,liberaltranslation,substitutetranslationandtranslationviaadditionwillbestudied.Atthesametime,someinappropriateinterpretations,likeredundancy,misinterpretationsasaresultofmisunderstandingandunsmoothnesswillbepointedoutandsomesuggestionswillbegivenastohowtobetterinterpretthem.AlltheexampleslistedinthisthesisaretakenfromPremierWenJiabao'sPressConferences.Itishopedthatthisthesiswillbeofusefulimplicationstothefuturestudiesandpracticesininterpretation.

摘要

在每年两会期间召开的记者招待会上，国家领导人经常会引用一些古诗词、谚语、典故等表达方式，它们内涵丰富，中国文化色彩浓厚。

如何把它们翻译好，让国内外的媒体理解，又不失原表达的美感，给译员的现场口译工作也提出了很大的挑战。

本论文以温家宝总理的记者招待会为例，重点分析了汉译英口译中的古诗词和具有中国特色的表达方式及口译员现场翻译时所采取的策略，如：

直译、直译加解释、意译、增添翻译、替代翻译等。

同时，本论文也对一些汉译英口译中出现的赘述、译员不理解导致的误译、译文前后不连贯等问题予以分析，并提出解决方案。

希望能够对以后的口译研究和实践有所借鉴意义。

China'srapideconomicdevelopmenthasattractedworldwideattention;asaresult,theworldistakingeveryopportunitytolearnmoreaboutthepoliciesoftheChinesegovernmentandtheprospectsofChina.OneoftheeffectivewaystheycandothatisthroughthePressConferencesheldduringNPCandCPPCCeveryyear.AndwhatmakesitpossiblefortheothercountriestounderstandChinainthePressConferencesisinterpretation.

DuringthePressConferences,thePremierwouldoftenexpresshisideasbywayofancientChinesepoemsandexpressionswithdistinctiveChinesecharacteristics,whichcanposeahugechallengetotheinterpretersduetothedifferencesincultureandlanguagebetweenChinaandothercountries.Properinterpretationsoftheseculture-richexpressionscanaddtothebeautyoforiginalmessages,whileimproperones,ontheotherhand,notonlycanconfusetheaudience,butsometimescanhaveseriousconsequences,evendoharmtoChina'srelationswithothercountriesorharmChina'sreputationontheinternationalstage.Soitisnecessarytostudytheseculture-richexpressionsandtheirinterpretingstrategies.

Inthisthesis,theauthorfirstgivesabriefintroductiontoconferenceinterpreting,includingitsdefinitions,itscharacteristics,anditsrequirementsfortheinterpreters,whicharethebasisforthefollowingchapters.ThenananalysisoftheChinese-Englishinterpretationofculture-richexpressionsinPressConferencesandageneralintroductiontointerpretingstrategiesisgiveninchapter3.Inchapter4,adetailedstudyofthecopingstrategiesofinterpretingculture-richexpressionswillbeconducted,whichservesasabackbonetothisstudy.Pitfallsregardingtheinterpretationofculture-richexpressionswillbeanalyzedinchapter5.

Thischapterisaimedatgivingabriefintroductiontoconferenceinterpreting,includingitsdefinitions,characteristics,anditsrequiredqualitiesfortheinterpreters,whichlaythefoundationforthefollowingchapters.

2.1DefinitionsofConferenceInterpreting

Beforewemoveontoconferenceinterpreting,itisnecessarytoknowaboutinterpretationfirst,fortheknowledgeofithelpsusbetterunderstandconferenceinterpreting.

AsMeiDeming（2006）hassaid,interpretation,asabridgeincross-culturalexchanges,meansthetransformationoftheinformationonehasperceivedandunderstoodamongdifferentlanguagesinapreciseandswiftmannerorally.

Conferenceinterpreting,abranchofinterpretation,canbedividedintotwocategories,consecutiveinterpretation,whichisoftenusedindiplomaticmeetings,banquetsaddresses,PressConferences,businessnegotiations,academicseminarsandsoon,onwhichoccasionstheinterpreterlistenstopartorallofthespeech,thenstartsinterpretingwiththehelpofnotes;andsimultaneousinterpretation,whichisoftenusedininternationalforumsandsummits,onwhichoccasionstheinterpreterstartsinterpretingafewsecondsafterthespeechhasstartedandgoesoninterpretingthroughoutthewholespeech,andfinishesalmostatthesametimeasthespeaker.

2.2CharacteristicsofConferenceInterpreting
