2、 Chinese cultural characteristics, including ancient Chinese poems, proverbs, allusions and the like. It is a challenge to all interpreters to interpret them well so as to make the audience understand them without the loss of their original beauty at the same time.This thesis will analyze the cultur
3、al-embedded expressions, including the ancient Chinese poems and words and expressions with Chinese characteristics. Besides, the strategies used in interpretation, like literal translation, literal translation plus explanation, liberal translation, substitute translation and translation via additio
4、n will be studied. At the same time, some inappropriate interpretations, like redundancy, misinterpretations as a result of misunderstanding and unsmoothness will be pointed out and some suggestions will be given as to how to better interpret them. All the examples listed in this thesis are taken fr
5、om Premier Wen Jiabaos Press Conferences. 6、上,国家领导人经常会引用一些古诗词、谚语、典故等表达方式,它们内涵丰富,中国文化色彩浓厚。如何把它们翻译好,让国内外的媒体理解,又不失原表达的美感,给译员的现场口译工作也提出了很大的挑战。本论文以温家宝总理的记者招待会为例,重点分析了汉译英口译中的古诗词和具有中国特色的表达方式及口译员现场翻译时所采取的策略,如:直译、直译加解释、意译、增添翻译、替代翻译等。同时,本论文也对一些汉译英口译中出现的赘述、译员不理解导致的误译、译文前后不连贯等问题予以分析,并提出解决方案。希望能够对以后的口译研究和实践有所借鉴意义。关键词:记者招待会,口译策略,文化负载词,中国特色表达,诗词ContentsChap

One of the effective ways the
12、y can do that is through the Press Conferences held during NPC and CPPCC every year. And what makes it possible for the other countries to understand China in the Press Conferences is interpretation. During the Press Conferences, the Premier would often express his ideas by way of ancient Chinese po
13、ems and expressions with distinctive Chinese characteristics, which can pose a huge challenge to the interpreters due to the differences in culture and language between China and other countries. Proper interpretations of these culture-rich expressions can add to the beauty of original messages, whi
14、le improper ones, on the other hand, not only can confuse the audience, but sometimes can have serious consequences,even do harm to Chinas relations with other countries or harm Chinas reputation on the international stage. So it is necessary to study these culture-rich expressions and their interpr
15、eting strategies. In this thesis, the author first gives a brief introduction to conference interpreting, including its definitions, its characteristics, and its requirements for the interpreters, which are the basis for the following chapters. Then an analysis of the Chinese-English interpretation
16、of culture-rich expressions in Press Conferences and a general introduction to interpreting strategies is given in chapter 3. In chapter 4, a detailed study of the coping strategies of interpreting culture-rich expressions will be conducted, which serves as a backbone to this study. Pitfalls regardi
17、ng the interpretation of culture-rich expressions will be analyzed in chapter 5.This thesis aims to conduct an in-depth study to the cultural elements in Press Conferences and the strategies used in interpretation. Also, it is hoped that this study can find out the limitations of the previous studie
18、s, and be of useful implications to future studies.Chapter 2 A Brief Introduction to Conference InterpretingThis chapter is aimed at giving a brief introduction to conference interpreting, including its definitions, characteristics, and its required qualities for the interpreters, which lay the foun
19、dation for the following chapters.2.1 Definitions of Conference InterpretingBefore we move on to conference interpreting, it is necessary to know about interpretation first, for the knowledge of it helps us better understand conference interpreting.As Mei Deming (2006) has said, interpretation, as a
20、 bridge in cross-cultural exchanges, means the transformation of the information one has perceived and understood among different languages in a precise and swift manner orally. Conference interpreting, a branch of interpretation, can be divided into two categories, consecutive interpretation, which
21、 is often used in diplomatic meetings, banquets addresses, Press Conferences, business negotiations, academic seminars and so on, on which occasions the interpreter listens to part or all of the speech, then starts interpreting with the help of notes; and simultaneous interpretation, which is often
22、used in international forums and summits, on which occasions the interpreter starts interpreting a few seconds after the speech has started and goes on interpreting throughout the whole speech, and finishes almost at the same time as the speaker.Press Conference is a kind of conference. The relevant
23、 authorities invite the press from home and abroad, take questions and answer them. It usually uses consecutive interpretation, in which the interpreter listens to the speech, takes notes and interprets when the speaker has finished his speech or stops his speech for interpretation.2.2 Characteristi
24、cs of Conference InterpretingAs this study mainly focuses on the interpreting of culture-rich expressions in Press Conferences, the characteristics of conference interpreting is studied with Press Conferences as an example.First, the Press Conferences interpreting is usually live on the TV, and the
25、interpreter is the delegate of the speaker, who is speaking on behalf of the country, so it has great political and social influences. Second, the Press Conference interpreting often covers a wide range of subjects. As press from all over the world would raise questions of all sorts, including curre
26、nt status of domestic and foreign affairs, peoples wellbeing, political and economic reforms, and sometimes sensitive issues concerning cross-strait relations, international relations. Third, the language should be precise, formal and brief and should stand between written and oral language. The int
27、erpreter tends to use simple sentences rather than long and complicated ones so as not to make grammatical mistakes or confuse the audience. Last, as the speaker often talks about the policies and principles of the country, inappropriate interpretations of them may harm the nations political and eco
28、nomic interests, image, reputation and its relations with other countries.In Press Conferences, the interpreter can listen and interpret at different times. When the speaker is speaking, the priority of the interpreter is to listen, grasp the main ideas and take notes. If they are not clear about what they have heard, they can ask the speaker to repeat. And they can focus on interpreting later when the speaker has stopped his speech. Compared with simultaneous interpretation, Press Conferences interpreting has several advantages.
