Theplanetthey’ddiscovered,knownas51Pegasib,wastoobig.“Theplanetthatwefoundwasextremelystrangeandit’snotatallthewayyouwouldhaveexpectedaplanettobe,”Quelozsaid.“IremembermanydiscussionsI’dhadwithMayorandtryingtoprovethatitwasnotaplanetbutintheendwealwayscircledbackandsaidthatthat’stheonlyexplanation.”

TheexoplanetwasroughlythesizeofJupiter,yetwasmorethan20timesclosertoitsstarthanEarthistotheSun.

SaraSeager,planetaryscientistandastrophysicistatmat,whowasagraduatestudentatHarvardwhenQuelozandMayormadetheirdiscovery,thoughtofahugepublicargumentatthetime.Shesaid,“Peopleresistedit,andrightlysoinscience—youcouldn’tseetheplanet,youdidn’thaveaphotoofone,youwerejustseeingthestar,theeffectonthestar,sopeoplewantedtoputthateffect（down）tosomethingelse.”
