MindyScheierisonamissiontomakefashionableclothingaccessibletoeveryone.In2014,shestartedtheRunwayofDreamsFoundation,anon-profitorganizationthathelpsbringadaptiveclothingtodisabledpeople.

Scheierexplainedtheinspirationbehindherefforts.“Myson,Oliver,wasbornwithrigidspinemusculardystrophy,”shesaid.“Hislackofstrengthcreatedchallengeswithtypicalclothing.Afterspendingyearsinthefashionindustry,Idecidedthattherewasanopportunitytocombinemyfashionexperiencewithmyothers.”

Scheierbegantocreatetrendyclothingthathersoncouldwearwithease.Forexample,sheusedmagnetsandelastics(松紧带)inplaceofbuttonsandzippers.ThoseadjustmentshaveenabledOlivertowearthesamestyleashisfriendsdo,evenjeans.

Scheier’svisionextendsbeyondjusthelpingherownson.“Isoonrealizedthatmillionsofdisabledpeoplewerealsostrugglingtoaccessfashionableclothingthatmeetstheirneeds,”shesaid.ThatwaswhyshestartedtheRunwayofDreamsFoundation.

OnSeptember5,2018,thefoundationhelditsannualfashionshowduringNewYorkFashionWeek.Theeventshowcasedthefoundation’snewadaptiveclothing.Theshowfeaturedseveraldisabledmodels,includingColeGottliebandMaddieHostetter.Cole,a9-year-oldboybornwithcerebralpalsy,lovestoplaybaseballandsoccer.Hewasexcitedtoparticipateinthefashionshow.“Itletsmebearolemodeltoothers,”hesaid.Maddie,aged8,wasbornwithonlyonefullarm.“IheardaboutRunwayofDreamsfrommymom,”explainedMaddie.“EventhoughIcanbuttonclotheswithonearm,themagnetshavemadeitmucheasierforme.”
