II.Thought,Culture:

AmericanPuritanismwasoneofthemostenduringinfluencesonAmericanthoughtandAmericanliterature.Tosomeextent,ithasbecomeastateofmind.PuritanismisthereligiousbeliefsofPuritans.Theyintendedto“purify”theChurchofEngland,sotheycametoAmericaforthesakeofreligiousfreedom,andtheywishedtoescapereligiouspersecution.Theirwayoflifewasbasedonthedoctrines.PuritanvaluesdominatedliteratureincolonialAmerica,andgreatlyinfluencedthewholeAmericanliterature.

Americanliteraturegrewoutofhumbleorigins.Theymostlyhadcloserelationshipwithreligion.ThereweresuchnotedPuritanwhowassaidthefirstAmericanwriter,becausehefirstdescribedNewEnglandasapromisingvirginland.HiswritingsaboutNorthAmericabecamethesourceofinformation,whicharousedtheattentionofmanypeopleinEnglandandEurope,anddrewthemovertothisNewWorld.
