FollowingthecontinuousandsteadynewgrowthinChina’snationaleconomy,thePortofShanghaihas,overthesixyearsfrom1988to1993,madeaninvestmentofRMB¥2.3billionincapitalconstructionandrenovation(革新),andupdatedalargenumberofhandlingmachines.Bothcargothroughputcapacityandhandlingefficiencyoftheporthaveincreasedremarkably.

Today,theporthasbecomeoneofthehotspotsthatattractbothattentionandinvestmentfromotherpartsofChinaandthewholeworld.DuringhisvisitinShanghaiinthespringof1992,DengXiaopingexpressedhishopethatShanghaiwouldshowsomechangeseveryyear.Takingthisasitsobjective,thePortofShanghaihasbeenquickeningthestepsinitsoperationalandcommercialactivitiesaswellasconstructionofdeep-waterportareas.

ThefourmarginalberthsofWaigaoqiaoNewPortAreahavebeenlargelycompletedandputintooperation.ConstructionoftheLuojingCoalTerminalwasstartedattheendof1993.GrainSiloswithacapacityof80,000tonsandamoderncommunicationbuildingforwatertrafficarebothshowingsignsofcompletion.Constructionofcoastal,domesticandinternationalpassengerterminalshassubstantiallyentereditsinitialstage.ThedeepwaterportareaatJinshanzuishallopenanewchapterinthehistoryofthePortofShanghai.

carpenters,electricians,mechanicsandTVrepairmen.Thesepeoplehavemoreworkthantheycanhandleandtheirannualincomesareoftenhigherthanthoseofcollegegraduates.Theolddifferencethatwhite-collarworkersmakeabetterlivingthanblue-collarworkersnolongerholdstrue.

Thereasonforthissituationisthetraditionalmyththatacollegedegreeisapassporttobrightfuture.Parentsbegintellingtheirchildrenthismythbeforetheyareoutofschool.Underthispressurethekidsfallinline.Whethertheywanttogotocollegeornotdoesn’tmatter.Everybodyshouldgotocollege.
