Wheretherealchangeappearstobehappeningasaresultofrisingpricesisinthe

lengthandlocationofstudents'foreignstudychoices.Thenumberofparticipantsin

short-termsummerprogramshasswelled,ashastheinterestincoursesatmoreexotic

locales.ForMiddleburyCollegestudents,forexample,ayearinFlorencecostsaround

$37,000;atSantiago,Chile,it's$27,000.Suchpricedifferenceshavecontributedto

modestorflatgrowthattraditionallypopularprogramsinwesternEuropeand

Australia,whereasschoolsinChile,Argentina,SouthAfrica,andChina(particularly

HongKong)areaggressivelyexpandingtomeetrisingdemand.

educationnonprofitsandtheStateDepartmentalsohasfueledthetrend.

Study-abroadcostsalsovarywildlybasedonthewaycollegesstructuretheir

programs.Schoolsthateffectivelyswapstudentswithaforeigncollegeareless

affectedbythefallingdollar,butAmericanschoolsthatoperatetheirownstudent

centersoftenenduppayingmoreforrent,utilities,andfacultysalariesastheU.S.
