Doohickeyhadjustmovedtoanewtownwhenhespottedanotice.Itwasstuckoutsideabighouseattheendofhisstreet.

‘That'sthejobforme,'saidDoohickey.‘Inee-dmsoonmeye.m'orepocket

Hepushedthedoorbell.Thenhejumped.

Weeeeyow-weeeeyow-weeeeyow!

Kaaabooooom!

Aloudalarmsoundedinsidethehouse,followedbyaterrificexplosion.

Awindowflewopenatthetopofthehouse.Acloudofthicksmokebillowedout.

‘Whatdoyouwant?

'coughedavoicefrominsidethecloud.‘Can'tyouseethatI'mbusy?

Thesmokecleared.Theprofessor'sfacepeereddownatDoohickey.

‘Excuseme,'saidDoohickey.‘Myname'sDoohickey.I'vecomeaboutthejob.'

‘Whatjob?

'snappedtheprofessor.

‘Asassistant,'saidDoohickey.‘Thenoticesaysyouneedone.'

‘Oh,absolutely!

'saidtheprofessor,beginningtogrin.

Thenoticehadbeenupforoverayear,butDoohickeywasthefirstpersontoaskaboutit.

‘Comeonup!

'saidtheprofessor.Hisheaddisappeared.

Amomentlater,thefrontdoorspranghalf-open.Doohickeypeeredinside.Ahugemountainofposthadstoppedthedoorfromopeningproperly.Buttherewasnoonethere.

Doohickeyfeltsurethatthedoorhadopenedforhim,sohesqueezedthroughintothehallway.

AbuzzersoundedinDoohickey'sear.Hewassurprisedtosee-ashlititplebaoibrbinginthehallwaybesidehim.

Tinypropellersspuntheshiparound.Doohickeysawthewords,‘FOLLOWME'writteninbigredlettersonitsside.

Chaptertwo

Hefollowedtheshipupatall,windingstaircase.Hepassedroomafterroomstuffedfullofstrange-lookingmachines.Weretheytheprofessor'sinventions?

Doohickeyknewthathewassupposedtogostraightupthestairs,buthecouldn'thelphimself.Hepopp

theroomstotakeacloserlook.

ThefirstthingDoohickeycameacrosswasacomputerscreenfixedtoahugemetalcage.Thecageseemedtobestuffedfullofstraw.

Doohickeypushedhishandintoit.

‘Ouch!

'hesquealed,pullingitoutagain.Atinyneedlewasstickingoutofhisthumb.

Therewasalabelfixedtothecomputerscreen.

‘Well,itdidn'tfindthisone,'saidDoohickeycrossly,eaesdlheebsatcukckintthoethnestraw.

Thenextmachinehadlotsofelectricfansfixedbeneathalargemetalfunnel.Therewassandalloverthefloor.Thelabelsaid:

‘Thislookslikefun,'thoughtDoohickey.Heswitchediton.

Sandbegantricklingoutofthefunnelandthefansstartedspinning.Thenthestrangestthinghappened.

Thesanddidn'tfallontothefloor.Ithungintheair.Andslowly,itshapeditselfintoafloatingcastle.

Doohickeywalkedslowlyaroundthemachine.Hecouldn'thtebwelaiesvseeweihnag.

Thenallofasudden,hebumpedintosomeoneelse.Whenhesawwhoitwas,henearlyjumpedoutofhisskin.

Theotherpersonwashim!

Itwaslikelookinginamirror,exceptthattherewasnoglass.

DoohickeyreachedouthishandandtheotherDoohickeydidthesame.Theirfingersmetinmid-airandhefeltthewarmthofhisownhandpressingback.Itwastoocreepy.

‘Ughhh!

'shiveredDoohickey.Hesteppedbackwardsstraightintothefloatingsa-ncdastle.

ThecastleexplodedandDoohickeyfoundhimselfinthemiddleofasandstorm.Sandbleweverywhere,intohiseyesanduphisnose.

Coughingandsneezing,hegropedhiswaybacktotheswitchandturneditoff.

Thesandstormdisappeared.AndsohadtheotherDoohickey!

ThenDoohickeynoticedalargemetalplateonthefloor.Therewasanotherlabelonit.

‘Ofcourse!

'sighedDoohickey.

Themetalplatewasanotheroftheprofessori'nvsentions.IthadmadetheotherDoohickeyappearwhenhehadsteppedontoit.

Iwon'ttrythatagain,hethought.Its'abittoospooky.

Abuzzersounded.Doohickeysawtheair-shipbobbingupanddowninthedoorway.Ithadcomebacktofindhim.

‘Igotlost,'saidDoohickey.Hecouldn'tthinkofabetterexcuse.

Theshipbuzzedagaincrosslyandglidedbacktowardsthestairs.

‘Coming,'saidDoohickey.

ChapterThree

Theyreachedthetopofthehouse.

Theair-shipledDoohickeyintoasmokyattic.Itwasstuffedfullofbooks,testtubesandlumpsoftangledwiring.

Asmallshaggydogpeeredoutathimfrombeneathaworkbench.Acatlaysunningitselfonthewindowsill.

‘Whatkeptyou?

'askedtheprofessor.Hewashunchedoveraheapofmetalinonecorner.

‘Iwasadmiringsomeofyourinventions,'saidDoohickey.

‘Oht,hoseoldthings,s'aidtheprofessor.‘This,he'said,pointingtothetwistedheapofmetal,‘ismylatestandgreatestinvention.'

‘Whatisit?

'askedDoohickey.Itdidn'tlookveryexciting.Heexpectedthatitwasamachineforgettinagblo

stone.Orformakingomeletteswithoutbreakingeggs.

‘It'stheRoBoffin2000M-PuultirposeRobot,'saidtheprofessor,proudly.

‘Whatdoesitdo?

'askedDoohickey.

‘Absolutelyanything!

'saidtheprofessor.‘Letmeshowyou.'

Theprofessorscribbledsomewordsontoascrapofpaper.HefedthepaperthroughtheslotintherobotThenhepressedabigbuttonandsteppedback.

Therobothummedandwhirredforabit.Thenitclimbedslowlytoitsfeet.Itwasenormous.Itsheadalmostscrapedtheatticceiling.

Thelightsontherobot'sfaceflickeredonandoff.Itlookedasifitwasthinkingaboutsomething.

Andthen⋯itpaintedapictureoftheprofessor'sdog.

Itplayedapieceofmusiconthetesttubes.

Anditdiscoveredthreenewwaysofsplittingtheatom.

‘Prettygood,eh?

'saidtheprofessor,whentherobothadfinished.

‘Cool!

sa'idDoohickey.Hewasreallyamazed.Thehuge,heavyrobothadwhizzedaroundtheattic,andithadn'tdisturbedsomuchasapaperclip.

‘ItcandoanythingIaskeditto,'saidtheprofessor.

ChapterFour

Doohickeywentbackdownthewindingstaircase,pasttheroomsfullofinventions.

Lookatallthesesillymachines,hethought.Whydoesn'ttheprofessorinventsomethinguseful;somethi

dothehousework?

Thenhehadabrain-wave.‘Ofcourse!

'hesaid.Hesetoffupstairsagain.

‘Backsosoon?

'saidNewton.‘Ithoughyoudidn'twantthejob.'

‘Ididn't,'saidDoohickey,‘but-Iwav'e.v'ehadabrain

‘Oh,wegetlotsofthemaroundhere,'saidthedog,yawning.

Doohickeypickedthelistoutofthebin.Hestuckitbacktogetherwithsomestickytape.

‘Howdoesthatlook?

'heasked,showingittoNewton.

Newtonstudiedthelist.‘ItlooksOKtome,'hesaid.

‘Nowforthecleverbit,'saidDoohickey.

Heclimbedontopofastoolandfedthestuck-togetherlistthroughtheslotintherobot'schest.

‘Ohdear,'saidNewton,shakinghishead,‘theprofessorisn'tgoingtolikethis.

‘Theprofessorisn'tgoingtofindout!

'saidDoohickey.Hehitthebigbutton.

Therobothummed,whirredandthenstraighteneditselfup.

‘It'llallendintears,'sighedNewton.

Thelightsontherobot'sfaceflickeredonandoffforafewminutesandthenitstompedoutoftheattic.

‘Pieceofcake!

'saidDoohickey,grinning.‘Now,wherecanItakeanap?

Therobotstompeddownthestairsandintotheprofessor'sbathroom.

Itgrabbedagreatarmfulofdirtyclothes.Thenitcarriedthemdowntothekitchen.Butinsteadofputtingthemintothewashingmachineitstuffedthemintotheoven.

Next,ittooksomemeatandvegetablesoutofthefridge.Itchoppedandslicedthemtomakeadeliciousstew.Thenitemptiedthewholelotintothewashingmachine!

Afterthat,itbroughtthelawnmowerintothehouseandranitoverthehallcarpet.

AndittooktheHooveroutsideandsuckedtheleavesoffthelawn.

ChapterFive

Theprofessor'sneighbourswereusedtostrangethingsgoingonathishouse.Buttheyhadneverseenanythingquiteliketherobot.

‘Whatdoyouthinkit'supto?

'askedoneofthem.Therobothadjustfetchedandhanmailms.eIrtawasnownailing

upthefrontdoor.

‘Perhapstheprofessor'sgoneaway,'suggestedanother,‘andhe'safraidthatsomeonewilltryanTherobotdidn'tseemtomindthateveryonewaslookingatit.Itproppedaladderupagainstthesideofthehouse.
