PsychologistJeanTwenge,aprofessoratSanDiegoStateUniversity,believestoday’steenagersare“ontheedge”ofamajormentalhealthcrisisandrequestes,“doanythingthatdoesn’tinvolveascreen”.Theproblemis,sheclaims,childrenbornbetween1995and2012havegrownupwithasmartphoneintheirhands,andithas“changedeveryaspect”oftheirlives.Thenumberofteenagerswhoactuallyseetheirfriendsfrequentlyhasdroppedbymorethan40%since2000.In2015,only56%of17-year-oldwentonadate,downfrom85%.Modernteenagersareslowertolearntodrive,orearnmoneyandspendmoretimeathome.They’re“ontheirphone,intheirroom,aloneandoftendepressed”,shesays.

Somecritics,however,sayweshouldencourageourchildrentospendmoretimeonline.RobertHannigan,formerdirectorofGCHQ,saidinAugustthatBritainisbadlyshortofengineersandcomputerscientists,andurgedchildrentodevelopcyberskilltocompeteinthedigitaleconomy.
