Halfoftheworld'scoralreefshavediedinthelast30years.Nowscientistsareracingtoensurethattherestsurvive.

Theplanet'shealthdependsonthesurvivalofcoralreefs.Theyareoftendescribedasunderwaterrainforests.Inaddition,thereefsserveasbarriersthatprotectcoastlinesfromthefullforceofpowerfulstorms.Coralsareusedinmedicalresearchontreatmentfordiseases.Theyarekeytolocaleconomies,aswell,sincethereefsattracttourists,thefishingindustry,andotherbusinesses,bringinginbillionsofdollarsofrevenue(收入).

Coralsareinvertebrates,oranimalsthatlackabackbone.Theylivemostlyintropicalwaters.Thecoralsreleaseasubstancecalledcalciumcarbonate,whichformsprotectiveskeletonsaroundthem.Theskeletonsgrowandtakeonvividcolors.Thisistheresultofthecorals'symbiotic(共生的),ormutuallybeneficial,relationship,withalgae(藻类)thatliveintheirtissuesandgivethemenergy.

Butcoralsareparticularlysensitivetochangesintemperature.Ariseofjust1to2℃canforcethecoralstodriveoutthealgae.Thenthecorals'skeletonsturnwhiteinaprocesscalled“bleaching(白化).”Coralscansurviveinthesehighertemperaturesonlyforafewmonths.

TheproblemforthereefsincreasedgreatlyduringarecentextendedElNiñoweatherphenomenon.In2015-2016,thelongerElNiñowarmedthePacificneartheequator,whichledtothemostwidespreadbleachingofcoralreefseverrecorded.Thisbleachingeventcontinuestocreateproblemsfortheworld'sreefs.

IntheIndianOcean,neartheislandsoftheMaldives,about73%ofthecoralreefssufferedbleachingbetweenMarchandMay2016.AreasinthecentralPacificwerehitthehardest—about90%ofthereefsweredestroyedinthewatersoftheRepublicofKiribati.

Andtheproblemisnotjustglobalwarming.Thereefshavealsobeenaffectedbypollution,coastaldevelopment,andoverfishing.
