SusanButcherwasborninCambridge,Massachusetts.InherteensSusanwasgivenaSiberianhuskydogandbecameveryinterestedinhuskiesassleddogs.AfterreadingabouttheIditarodRace,SusanmovedtoAlaska.Shegotseveraljobstoearnmoneytobuyherselfasledandateamofhuskies.Afteryearsofhardworkandtraining,SusanachievedherdreamofracingontheIditarodTrail.

In1978,attheageof24,Susanenteredtheraceforthefirsttimeandbecamethefirstwomantofinishinthetop20.In1982shecameinsecond.In1984shewasleadingherteamacrossafrozenwaterwaywhentheyfellintothewater.HerleaddogmanagedtopullSusanandtheotherdogsoutofdanger.Remarkably,shecameinsecond.
