Therewasacafeinthevillage,withtablesoutside,andatoneofthesetablessatayoungman.Hefinishedhisbreakfast,drankhiscoffee,lookedupintothebluesky,andfeltthewarmsunonhisface.NickLortzwasahappyman.

Thewaitercameuptohistable.'Morecoffee'heasked.

'Yeah.Great,'saidNick.Hegavethewaiterhiscoffeecup.

Thewaiterlookedatthecameraonthetable.'Onvacation'hesaid.'Whereareyoufrom'

'SanFrancisco,'Nicksaid.Helaughed.'ButI'mnotonvacation--I'mworking.I'matravelwriter,andI'mdoingabookonmountainsinNorthAmerica.I'vegotsomegreatpicturesofyourmountain.'

ThetwomenlookedupatWhistlerMountainbehindthevillage.Itlookedverybeautifulinthemorningsun.

'Hi,Jan,'saidNick.Hesmiled.I'mNick.Butwedidn'tmeetatapartyinToronto.Idon'tgotopartiesveryoften,andneverinToronto.'

'Oh,'thegirlsaid.Butshedidn'tgetupormoveaway.

ThemanwithwhitehairwatchedNickandwaited.Afterfouroffiveminutes,Nickfinishedhiscoffee,tookhisbooksandhiscamera,andleftthecafeHiscarwasjustoutsidethegirl'shotel,andhewalkedslowlyalongthestreettoit.

Themanwithwhitehairwaitedasecond,thenquicklyfollowedNick.

Fromawindowhighupinthehotel,thegirllookeddownintotheroad.ShesawNick,andthemanwithwhitehairaboutfiftyyardsbehindhim.Nickgotintohiscar,andthemanwithwhitehairwalkedquicklytoaredcaracrossthestreet.FivesecondslaterNickdroveawayinhisbluecar,andtheredcarbegantofollowhim.

Whenthegirlsawthis,shesmiled,thenwenttoputsomethingsinhertravelbag.

Thatevening,inhishotelroominVancouver,NickcouldnotstopthinkingaboutthegirlintheWhistlercafewhydidshecomeandsitwithhimShedidn'tknowhim,andthatstoryaboutapartyinTorontowasn'ttrue.Andshewasworriedaboutsomething.Butwhat

Afteratime,Nickbegantowalkbacktohishotel.Hecametoabusystreet,andwaited,withasmallcrowdofpeople,togoacross.Atallwomaninabluedressstoodnexttohimsheturnedandsmiledathim.

'It'sthefirstwarmeveningofspring,'shesaid.'It'snicetobeout,afterthelongcoldwinter.'

'Yeah,'saidNick.'It'sgreat.It's-'

Suddenly,therewasahandinhisback-andthehandpushedNickintotheroad.Nickfellonhisface,infrontofabiggreencar.

Peoplescreamed.

Butthegreencarstopped,onlyinchesfromNick'shead.ThewomaninthebluedressranintotheroadandpulledNicktohisfeet.
