Americansareusedtotraveling.Somepeoplemakelong-distancecommutingtoworkdaily.Theirjobsmayevenrequirethemtotakefrequentbusinesstrips.Mostcompaniesprovideanannualvacationfortheiremployees,andpeopleoftenusethattimetotravel.Somepeoplejustvisitfriendorrelativesindistantstates.Somegoonlow-budgetweekendtripsandstayineconomymotels.Thosewithmoreexpensivetasteschooseluxurioushotels.Campingoutinthegreatoutdoorsappealstoadventuroustypes.Sometravelinrecreationalvehiclestocampoutincomfort,whileothers“roughit”bysleepingintents.Familiesoftenplantheirtripswiththekidsinmind.Moreandmore“familyfriendly”hotelsofferspecialprogramsforchildren.

Pet

Americanslovepets.Manypetownerstreattheirpetsasapartofthefamily.YoumightsayAmericanstreattheirpetsliketheytreattheirchildren—sometimesevenbetter.

InAmerica,therearemorehouseholdswithpetsthanthosewithchildren.Atleast43percentofUShomeshavepetsofsomesort.Usualcreatures,suchasmonkeys,snakesandevenwolves,findahomewithsomeAmericans.Morecommonpetsincludefish,miceandbirds.Buttheall-timefavoritesarecatsanddogs,evenattheWhiteHouse.Americanssometimeshavestrongfeelingsaboutwhetherdogsorcatsmakebetterpets.“Dogpeople”and“catpeople”oftenenjoyfriendlycompetition.

ManygrocerystoresinAmericasellpetfoods.Petscanevenaccompanytheirownersonvacation.Fancyhotelsarebeginningtoaccommodatebothmanandanimal.AnimalguestsatFourSeasonsHotelscanenjoydeliciousmealsservedonfinechinaandsleepinsoftbeds.

TheaverageAmericanenjoyshavingpetsaround,andforgoodreason.Researchershavediscoveredthatinteractingwithanimalslowersaperson’sbloodpressure.Dogscanofferprotectionfromrobbersandunwelcomevisitors.Catscanhelpridthehomeofunwantedmice.Littlecreaturesofallshapesandsizescanprovidefriendshipandlove.Inmanycases,havingapetpreparesayoungcouplefortheresponsibilitiesofparenthood.Petsevenencouragesocialrelationships:

theygivetheirownersanappearanceoffriendliness,andtheyprovideagoodsubjectofconversation.

PetsareasbasictoAmericancultureashotdogsorapplepie.ToAmericans,petsarenotjustproperty,butapartofthefamily.
