1.WangXizhi
WangXizhi(王羲之)(303–361)wasafamousChinesecalligrapher.OneofthemostcelebratedcalligraphersinChinesehistory,heissaidbetheexemplarofthehighartofcalligraphy,amasterofeveryformbutparticularlyoftherunningscript(xingshuChinese“行書”).BorninLinqincountyinShandongprovince,helivedinpresent-dayShaoxing,Zhejiang,mostofhislife.Noneofhisoriginalworksremaintoday.
WangXizhidevelopedcalligraphyintoatranscendentartform,whichratherthansimplyconveyingwritteninformationservedasavehicleforcommunicationofahigherorder,focusingonbeautyoflineandformandaboveallondynamicandrhythmicflowandtransmutationofenergy.HenominallyservedtheEasternJincourt,holdingvariouspostsinthecapitalJiankang(modernNanjing,JiangsuProvince)andthenbecomingGeneraloftheArmyontheRight(youjun),bywhichtitleheissometimesknown.
2.PrefacetotheOrchidPavilion
ThemostrepresentativeworkofWangXizhiishisPrefacetotheOrchidPavilioninrunningstyle.Onthethirddayofthethirdlunarmonthin353,WangXizhiinvitedoverthirtyfriendsandhissonstoapartyattheOrchidPavilionbeneaththeKuaijiHill,wheretheydrankandimprovisedpoems.Amidthegather-together,26menmadepoemsonthespot.Withtheslighteffectofliquor,WangXizhiflourishedhisbrushandcompletedatabreathaprefacetotheirpoems.Intermsofthecontent,itisamixtureofscenerydescriptionandemotionalexpression,conveyingthewriter'sinnerconflictsandfeelings.Viewedintheperspectiveofcalligraphy,thecharactersresembleflyingdragonsanddancingphoenixes,emittingavigorousandunrestrainedspirit.Inthework,theartofcalligraphyhadreachedthepeakofdevelopmentatitstime.324charactersoftheprefacearealllegible.The20Chinesecharacters“zhi”aredifferentfromeachotherinstyle.PrefacetotheOrchidPavilionhasbeenreveredbygenerationsofcalligraphersas"No.1RunningScriptintheWorld".
