Senatordirksen,mr.chiefJustice,mr.VicePresident,PresidentJohnson,VicePresidentHumphrey,myfellowamericans--andmyfellowcitizensoftheworldcommunity:

iaskyoutosharewithmetodaythemajestyofthismoment.intheorderlytransferofpower,wecelebratetheunitythatkeepsusfree.

Eachmomentinhistoryisafleetingtime,preciousandunique.Butsomestandoutasmomentsofbeginning,inwhichcoursesaresetthatshapedecadesorcenturies.

Thiscanbesuchamoment.

Forcesnowareconvergingthatmakepossible,forthefirsttime,thehopethatmanyofman'sdeepestaspirationscanatlastberealized.Thespiralingpaceofchangeallowsustocontemplate,withinourownlifetime,advancesthatoncewouldhavetakencenturies.

inthrowingwidethehorizonsofspace,wehavediscoverednewhorizonsonearth.

Forthefirsttime,becausethepeopleoftheworldwantpeace,andtheleadersoftheworldareafraidofwar,thetimesareonthesideofpeace.

Eightyearsfromnowamericawillcelebrateits200thanniversaryasanation.withinthelifetimeofmostpeoplenowliving,mankindwillcelebratethatgreatnewyearwhichcomesonlyonceinathousandyears--thebeginningofthethirdmillennium.

whatkindofnationwewillbe,whatkindofworldwewilllivein,whetherweshapethefutureintheimageofourhopes,isourstodeterminebyouractionsandourchoices.

Thegreatesthonorhistorycanbestowisthetitleofpeacemaker.Thishonornowbeckonsamerica--thechancetohelpleadtheworldatlastoutofthevalleyofturmoil,andontothathighgroundofpeacethatmanhasdreamedofsincethedawnofcivilization.

ifwesucceed,generationstocomewillsayofusnowlivingthatwemasteredourmoment,thatwehelpedmaketheworldsafeformankind.

Thisisoursummonstogreatness.

ibelievetheamericanpeoplearereadytoanswerthiscall.

Thesecondthirdofthiscenturyhasbeenatimeofproudachievement.wehavemadeenormousstridesinscienceandindustryandagriculture.wehavesharedourwealthmorebroadlythanever.wehavelearnedatlasttomanageamoderneconomytoassureitscontinuedgrowth.

wehavegivenfreedomnewreach,andwehavebeguntomakeitspromiserealforblackaswellasforwhite.

weseethehopeoftomorrowintheyouthoftoday.iknowamerica'syouth.ibelieveinthem.wecanbeproudthattheyarebettereducated,morecommitted,morepassionatelydrivenbyconsciencethananygenerationinourhistory.

nopeoplehaseverbeensoclosetotheachievementofajustandabundantsociety,orsopossessedofthewilltoachieveit.Becauseourstrengthsaresogreat,wecanaffordtoappraiseourweaknesseswithcandorandtoapproachthemwithhope.

Standinginthissameplaceathirdofacenturyago,FranklindelanoRooseveltaddressedanationravagedby

depressionandgrippedinfear.Hecouldsayinsurveyingthenation'stroubles:

"Theyconcern,thankGod,onlymaterialthings."

ourcrisistodayisthereverse.

wehavefoundourselvesrichingoods,butraggedinspirit;reachingwithmagnificentprecisionforthemoon,butfallingintoraucousdiscordonearth.

wearecaughtinwar,wantingpeace.wearetornbydivision,wantingunity.weseearoundusemptylives,wantingfulfillment.weseetasksthatneeddoing,waitingforhandstodothem.

Toacrisisofthespirit,weneedananswerofthespirit.

Tofindthatanswer,weneedonlylookwithinourselves.

whenwelistento"thebetterangelsofournature,"wefindthattheycelebratethesimplethings,thebasicthings--suchasgoodness,decency,love,kindness.

Greatnesscomesinsimpletrappings.

Thesimplethingsaretheonesmostneededtodayifwearetosurmountwhatdividesus,andcementwhatunitesus.

inthesedifficultyears,americahassufferedfromafeverofwords;frominflatedrhetoricthatpromisesmorethanitcandeliver;fromangryrhetoricthatfansdiscontentsintohatreds;frombombasticrhetoricthatposturesinsteadofpersuading.

improvingourruralareas;inprotectingourenvironmentandenhancingthequalityoflife--inalltheseandmore,wewillandmustpressurgentlyforward.
