That’sexactlywhat78-year-oldretiredfarmerLambrinosLykouresisdidtwoyearsagoinLithakia,ontheGreekislandofZakynthos.Lykouresis,whoclaimshehadcomplainedtohisneighborformonthsandonlywantedtolistentotheeveningnewsinpeace,suddenlysnapped.OnMay31,1996hegotupfromhisarmchair,tookhishuntingriflefromtheshelf,hobbledovertotheneighboringapartmentandrangthebell.When40-year-oldhousewifeImberiaBozikiansweredthedoor,hefiredthreetimesatpointblankrange,killingherinstantlyandwoundingher24-year-oldson.

Theoilindustrygoeswiththehighendoftherange,whichcouldequalasmuchas10%ofU.S.consumptionforaslongassixyears.Bypumpingmorethan1millionbarrelsadayfromthereserveforthenexttwothreedecades,lobbyistsclaim,thenationcouldcutbackonimportsequivalenttoallshipmentstotheU.S.fromSaudiArabia.Soundsgood.Anoilboomwouldalsomeanamultibillion-dollarwindfall（意外之财）intaxrevenues,royalties（开采权使用费）andleasingfeesforAlaskaandtheFederalGovernment.Bestofall,advocatesofdrillingsay,damagetotheenvironmentwouldbeinsignificant.“We’veneverhadadocumentcaseofoilrigchasingdeeroutontothepackice.”saysAlaskaStateRepresentativeScottOgan.
