Panel(嵌镶板)painting,commoninthirteenth-andfourteenthcenturyEurope,involvedapainstaking,laboriousprocess.Woodenplankswerejoined,coveredwithgesso(石膏)topreparethesurfaceforpainting,andthenpolishedsmoothwithspecialtools.Onthisperfectsurface,theartistwouldsketchacompositionwithchalk,refineitwithinks,andthenbeginthedeliberateprocessofapplyingthinlayersofeggtempera(用鸡蛋、水等稀释的颜料或涂料)painteggyolkinwhichpigments(颜料)aresuspended,withsmallbrushes.Thesuccessivelayeringofthesemeticulouslyappliedpaintsproducedthefinal,translucentcolors.
Backgroundsofgoldweremadebycarefullyapplyingsheetsofgoldleaf,andthenembellishing(修饰)ordecoratingthegoldleafbypunchingitwithametalrodonwhichapatternhadbeenembossed(使浮雕).Everystepintheprocesswasslowanddeliberate,thequick-dryingtemperademandedthattheartistknowexactlywhereeachstrokebeplacedbeforethebrushmetthepanel,anditrequiredtheuseoffinebrushes.Itwas,therefore,anidealtechniqueforemphasizingthehardlinearedgesandpure,fineareasofcolorthatweresomuchapartoftheoverallaesthetic(审美)ofthetime.Thenotionthatanartistcouldorwoulddashoffanideainafitofspontaneousinspirationwascompletelyalien(相异的)tothesedeliberatelyproducedworks.
Furthermore,makingthesepaintingswassotime-consumingthatitdemandedassistance.Allsuchworkwasdonebycollectiveenterpriseintheworkshops.Thepainterormasterwhoiscreditedwithhavingcreatedthepaintingmayhavedesignedtheworkandoverseenitsproduction,butitishighlyunlikelythattheartist'shandappliedeverystrokeofthebrush.Morelikely,numerousassistants,whohadbeentrainedtoimitatetheartist'sstyle,appliedthepaint.Thecarpenter'sshopprobablyprovidedtheframeandperhapssuppliedthepanel,andyetanothershopsuppliedthegold.Thus,notonlymanyhands,butalsomanyshopswereinvolvedinthefinalproduct.
