AneGampleofaspeciesoffrogthat,atfarasisknown,hasbecomeeGtinct,istheplatypusfrog.Likethewell-knownAustralianmammalitwasnamedafter,iteGhibitedsomeverystrangebehaviour;insteadofgivingbirthtotadpolesinthewater,itraiseditsyoungwithinitsstomach.Thebabyfrogswereactuallybornfromoutoftheirmother'smouth.Discoveredin1981,lessthantenyearslaterthefroghadcompletelyvanishedfromthecrystalclearwatersofBooloumbaCreeknearQueensland'sSunshineCoast.Unfortunately,thisfreakofnatureisnottheonlyfrogspeciestohavebeenlostinAustralia.Sincethe1970s,nolessthaneightothershavesufferedthesamefate.
Onetheorythatseemstofitthefactsconcernsthedepletionoftheozonelayer,awelldocumentedphenomenonwhichhasledtoasharpincreaseinultravioletradiationlevels.TheozonelayerismeanttoshieldtheEarthfromUVrays,butincreasedradiationmaybehavingaGREatereffectuponfrogpopulationsthanpreviouslybelieved.Anothertheoryisthatworldwidetemperatureincreasesareupsettingthebreedingcyclesoffrogs.
