Thecollectingofantiquesgoesbackalmostasfarashistory,beginningwiththepreservationoftempletreasures.InEngland,concernforthehistoricalaswellasaestheticsignificanceofantiquesled,asearlyasthe16thcentury,tocollectionsillustratingthenationalpast.In1857themuseumnowcalledtheVictoriaandAlbertopenedinLondonasarepositoryfordecorativearts,intendedtostimulatedesignersaswellascollectors.Itwasfollowedin1863byagreatpubliccollectioninVienna,in1882bytheMuseumofDecorativeArtsinParis,andin1897bytheMuseumoftheArtsofDecorationatCooperUnionSchoolofArtandArchitectureinNewYorkCity.Collectingantiquesbecameatrulypopularpursuitinthe20thcentury.
