SCENEThesame.Itisaroundmidnight.Thelampinthefronthallhasbeenturnedout,sothatnownolightshinesthroughthefrontparlor.Inthelivingroomonlythereadinglamponthetableislighted.Outsidethewindowsthewalloffogappearsdenserthanever.Asthecurtainrises,thefoghornisheard,followedbytheships'bellsfromtheharbor.

Tyroneisseatedatthetable.Hewearshispince-nez1andisplayingsolitaire.Hehastakenoffhiscoatandhasonanoldbrowndressinggown.Thewhiskeybottleonthetrayisthree-quartersempty.Thereisafreshfullbottleonthetable,whichhehasbroughtfromthecellarsotherewillbeanamplereserveonhand.Heisdrunkandshowsitbytheowlish,deliberatemannerinwhichhepeersateachcardtomakecertainofitsidentity,andthenplaysitasifhewasn'tcertainofhisaim.Hiseyeshaveamisted,oilylookandhismouthisslack.Butdespiteallthewhiskeyinhim,hehasnotescaped,andhelooksasheappearedatthecloseofthepreceedingact,asad,defeatedoldman,possessedbyhopelessresignation.
