Thankyou,MrsBrown.Well,I’mpleasedtotellyousomethingaboutthisorganisation.TheRedCrossmovementwasstartedbyabusinessmancalledJeanHenriDunant.Hisinterestintheinnocentpeoplecaughtupinwarbeganin1859whenhewitnessedtheeffectsofaveryfiercebattleinItaly.Atthetime,heorganisedallthevillagerstohelpthewoundedsoldiersandmakesuretheyhadfoodandbasicmedicalattention.In1864,thesamegentleman,togetherwithfourSwisscolleaguesfromhishometown,organisedaconferencewhichlaidthefoundationsforthenowfamousorganisation.
SothatRedCrossworkerscouldalwaysberecognised,theycreatedtheirownsymbol.Theychosearedcrossonawhitebackground.Itisprotectedbythelaws.Sometimeswefindthattheredcrosshasbeenusedasadecorativesymbolortorepresentfirstaidstationsbutthisisactuallywrongbecauseusingtheredcrossforanythingotherthantheinternationalorganisationisactuallyagainstthelaw.Eventhoughweoftenassociatearedcrosswithhospitalsandmedicaltreatment.InAustralia,asinmanycountries,therecognisedsymbolforfirstaidandmedicalcentres,infact,isawhitecrossonagreenbackground.
