TheearliestsettlerscometotheNorthAmericancontinenttoestablishcoloniesthatwerefreefromthecontrolsthatexitedinEuropeansocieties.TheywantedtoescapethecontrolsplacedontheirlivesbyKingsandgovernments,priestsandchurches,noblemenandaristocrats.Toagreatextent,theysucceeded.In1776,theBritishcolonialsettlersdeclaredtheirindependencefromEnglandandestablishedanewnation,theUnitedStates,theUnitedStatesofAmerican.Insodoing,theyoverthrowtheKingofEnglandanddeclaredthatthepowertotheKings.In1789,whentheywrotetheConstitutionfortheirnewnation,theyseparatedchurchandstatesothattherewouldneverbeagovernment-supportedchurch.Thisgreatlylimitedthepowerofthechurch.Also,inwritingtheConstitution,theyexpresslyforbadetitleofnobilitytoensurethatanaristocraticsocietywouldnotdevelop.Therewouldbenorulingclassofnobilityinthenewnation.
ThehistoricdecisionsmadebythosefirstsettlershavehadaprofoundeffectontheshapingoftheAmericancharacter.Bylimitingthepowerofthegovernmentandthechurchesandeliminatingaformalaristocracy,theycrestedaclimateoffreedomwheretheemphasiswasontheindividual.TheUnitedStatescametobeassociatedintheirmindswiththeconceptofindividualfreedom.ThisisprobablythemostbasesofalltheAmericanvalues.Scholarsandoutsideobserversoftencallthisvalueindividualism,butmanyAmericansusethewordfreedom.PerhapsthewordfreedomisoneoftherespectedpopularwordsintheUnitedStatestoday.
