NormanBethunewasbornin1890.Hebecameadoctorin1916andwenttoSpainin1936to
treatthewoundedsoldiersduringthewarthere.Hesoonrealisedthatmanypeopleweredyingbecausetheydidnotgettohospitalquicklyenough.DrBethunedevelopednewwaysoftakingcareofthesick.Heinventedspecialmedicaltoolstouseoutsidehospitalsandclosetothefightingareassothatdoctorscouldtreatthewoundedmorequickly.Hisinventionssavedmanylives.
In1938,DrBethunecametoChinaandhelpedtreatthewoundedduringtheAnti-Japanese
War.Atthattime,therewerefewdoctors,sohehadtoworkveryhardonhisown.HisexperienceoftreatingpeopleinSpainwasusefulinChina.Hedevelopedtrainingcoursesforlocaldoctorsandnurses,andwrotebookssothattheycouldlearnabouthowhetreatedthesick.
DrBethuneoftenworkedveryhardwithoutrestingortakingcareofhimself.Once,heeven
workedforsixty-ninehourswithoutstoppingandmanagedtosaveoverahundredlives.Onedayin1939,hecuthisfingerduringanoperation,buthecontinuedhisworkwithouttreatingit.Intheend,hediedofhiswound.
