Traditionally,menandwomenwereseenasoppositepolesofamagnet.Menwerestrong,womenwereweak;menwerethebreadwinners,womenwerethehomemakers;menwererational,womenwereemotional.Inaccordancewiththesebeliefs,themenfilledtheleadershippositionsinsociety,aswellasthemajorityofpositionsthatrequiredcourage,clear-thinkingandintellect.Womentookonthenurturing,caringorsupportivejobssuchasnurse,teacher,assistant.However,modernsocietyhasgreatlychallengedtheseperceiveddifferencesbetweenmenandwomen

Thesedaysgenderrolesarebecominglessclear.Womenaremovingintothemale-dominatedoccupationsandprovingthattheycanbeequallysuccessfulinthesefields.Moreover,somemenaretakingonthehomemakerroleandfindingthatitsuitsthem.Insomecultures,forexampletheNaxicultureofsouthwesternChina,thewomenhavealwaysbeentheheadofthehouseholdandresponsibleforbothworkandfinance.

So,aremenandwomenreallyallthatdifferent?

Fromthechangingperspectivestowardsthisquestion,itwouldseemthatsocializationplaysalargeroleindefiningmasculinityandfemininityinanygiventimeperiodandinanygivenculture.Inotherwords,perhapsmenandwomenarenotthatdifferentafterall.

Unit2

Cultureplaysanimportantroleinbusiness.Indifferentculturestherearedifferentideasaboutwhenmeetingsshouldbescheduled,howmuchnoticeshouldbegiven,Wherepeopleshouldbeseatedandhowthenegotiationsshouldbeproceed.Duringthenegotiationstherearealsovastculturaldifferencesinwhatisconsideredappropriatelanguage,communicationstyleandbodylanguage.Forexample,someculturevalueeyecontact,othersdonot.Someculturesuse'yes'asanacknowledgementofwhatthepersonhassaid,otheruse'yes'onlyforagreement.

Socialconventionsofgreeting,dressing,eatingandentertainingalsovaryconsiderablyamongstculturesandtheseareimportanttolearnsincealotofbusinesstakesplacewhilehavingdinnerorenjoyingdrinkstogether.

Ifabusinessmanattemptsacross-culturalbusinesspartnershipwithoutanadequateawarenessofhisassociate'sculture,heislikelytoencountermisunderstandingandmayevencauseoffence.Thiswilldamageandmayevenendthebusinessrelationship.Therefore,culturaldifferencesmustbecarefullyhandledwhendoingbusinesswithpeoplefromdifferentcountries.

Unit3

FightingAgainstPiracy

Nowadaystheproblemofpiracyhasbecomeincreasinglyserious.Notonlyisthereaseriouslackofknowledgeamongstthegeneralpublicaboutpiracyissues,butthereisalsoanattitudeofindifference.

ThesedayspiracyisstronglyevidentinthecommercialworldinthewideavailabilityofillegalVCDsandDVDs,theinclusionofCopyrightedpictures,webgraphics,videoclipsandmagazineportionsinbusinesspresentationsandthephotocopyingofbooksandarticlesfordistributionwithouttheauthor'spermission.

Thenegativeconsequencesofpiracyaretwo-fold.Firstly,theCopyrightownersarelikelytosuffersignificantfinanciallosses.Secondly,theCopyrightownerlosesrecognition,ifthesourceofthematerialisunacknowledged.

Thereforeitisimportantforallcitizenstobecomeeducatedaboutpiracyissues,tofollowcopyrightlawsintheirownlives,andtoencouragetheircolleaguesandfriendstodothesame.

TheImportanceofLearningSpokenEnglish

Intoday'smodernworld,learningspokenEnglishhasmanyadvantages.Englishisfastbecomingtheinternationallanguageofmanyfields,includingpolitics,businessandeducation.NotonlyisEnglishusedbetweennativespeakersandnon-nativespeakers,butitisalsousedincreasinglyasacommonlanguageininteractionsbetweennon-nativespeakers.

HavingagoodgraspofspokenEnglishhelpsyoutoimproveyourchancesofemployment.Thesedays,therearemanyforeigncompaniesoperatingfromChina,andmanyChinese-ownedcompanieshavetradelinkswithforeignpartners.ThesecompaniesrequirespeakersofEnglishwithsufficientlanguageskillstoensuresmoothbusinesstransactions.

SpokenEnglishalsoprovidesthechancesforyoutocommunicatesociallywithpeoplefrommanyothercountries.Itgivesyouawindowintoothercultures,andotherperspectivesoftheworld.Italsogivesyouaccesstoforeignfilms,TVprograms,musicandnews.

Therefore,spokenEnglishisanimportantandfundamentaltoolintoday'sglobalvillage.

BusinessEthics

Creatingandsustaininganethicalcorporationisn'tasdifficultasyoumightthink;it'sactuallyeasierthansomeoftheday-to-daybusinesschallengesyouface.Thekeystorunninganethicalcompanyareaccountability,honesty,andinformationtransparency.

Corporationsaren'tethicalorevilinandofthemselves--butpeoplecanbe.Soethicsmustfocusonyouandthepeopleyouworkwith.Mostpeoplewanttodotherightthing,butorganizationalstructuredoesnotguaranteetheywilldotherightthing,withoutmeaningtoorevenknowingit.Structuringanethicalcorporationmakesthegoaleasiertoachieve.

Thechallengecouldnotbemoreurgent.AsubstantialmajorityofpeopleinChinaaredissatisfiedwiththesocialbehaviorofourcorporations,sayseveralrecentnewsreports.Poortreatmentofworkersathomeandabroad,productsthatdon'tperformasadvertised,fakecommodities,poorcustomerservice,environmentalpollution,tomentionafew.

Responsiblebehaviorisimportanttoyourbusinesssuccess,butlet'snotforgetthatyou'reinbusiness--you'renotouttosolvetheworld'sproblems.Sohowdoyoubalancethetwo?

Whatdoesitmeantobeethicalinbusiness?

Itsimplyrequiresthatyoufollowyourbestmoralinstincts,eveninareasthatdon'tappeartoinvolvemoralissues,suchascost-benefitanalyses.Butwhilegoodethicsoftenequatestogoodbusiness,sometimesitdoesn't.Sometimesbeingtrulyethicalmeansgivingupsomethingyouwantinexchangefordoingtherightthing.That'swhyweworryaboutethicsinthefirstplace--ifitdidn'tcostusanything,everyonewouldbeethicalallthetime.

SPORTSANDPSYCHOLOGICALHEALTH.

Sportsdomuchgoodtoourhealth.Especiallytheycanbeofgreatvaluetoourpsychologicalhealth.Peoplewhoareinvolvedinathleticsfeelmoreself-sufficientandconfidentintheirabilities.Theyfeeltheyareincontroloftheirownactions.SportsofferpeopleanopportunitytoexperienceIfeachofthemlearnstoworkforhisteamandnotforhimselfonthefootballfield,hewillfinditnaturaltoworkforthegoodofhiscountryinsteadofonlyforhisownbenefit.

LifeafterRetirement

ThemomentofretirementwillmeanthebeginningofanewlifeforOldJack.Fromtheageof16to60,hekeptworkingveryhard.Workandstudy,familyandsocietywerewhathefocusedon.Now,inretirement,hewantstohavealifeofhisown.Thefirstthinghewantstodoistotravelaroundtheworld,tovisittheAfricanwildlife,toappreciatethegloriousWesternandOrientalcultureandtogotoeverycorneroftheworldhehaseverdreamedof.Then,hewillfindabeautifulquietplace,andwrite.Hewillwriteabouthisownworld.Maybe,hewillnotpublishit,andhewillsimplywriteforfun.Ofcourse,familylifewillremainimportantforhim.Everyweek,whenhisfamilygatherstogether,theywillsharetheirhappinessandsolvetheirproblemstogether.Lifeafterretirementmeansmuchmoretimeforhim,andhewillenjoyeveryminuteofit.

OnGlobalization

Intheprocessofglobalization,manyforeignthingshaveenteredintoourlivesandhavechangedourlives.Thishasmadetheworldbecomesmallerandsmaller.Forexample,wecanwatchforeignmovies,enjoyforeignfood,wearfashionableforeignclothes,andevenusehigh-techproductsimportedfromadvancedcountries.Somepeopleevencelebratetheforeignfestivalsandadoptforeignlifestyleorforeignideasinordertobeaglobalcitizen.Wheneveryougo,youmayfindthingsthatarefamiliartoyouinyourhometownorhomeland.Manypartsoftheworldarewatchingthesamefilm,andthesamesongispopularatthesametimeallovertheworld.Eventhestyleofarchitecturehasbecomeidentical,especiallyincosmopolitancites,youmayfindsomesimilarfeaturesintheircitybuildings.

Therearedifferentideasaboutglobalization.Thosewhoareinfavorofglobalizationtakeapositiveandoptimisticattitudetowardsit.Whattheyvaluemostisthegoodeffectsoftheglobalizationandthevariousbenefitsitbringsabout.However,therearealsosomepeoplewhostronglydisliketheideaandthepracticeofglobalization.Theyplacemoreemphasisonthebadorevileffectsofglobalization.

Inmyopinion,everycoinhastwosides.Weshouldtakearealisticattitudetowardsglobalization.Ontheonehand,globalizationoftheeconomyandtosomeextent,theglobalizationofculturemaybringsomeadvantages.Itmaypromotethedevelopmentoflessdevelopedareas,improvesomepeople'slivingstandardandenrichtheirlocalculture,andalsogivepeoplemorechancestoknowaboutotherswhicharequitedifferentfromtheirown.Ontheotherhand,globalizationmaybringaboutsomedisadvantagesornegativeeffects.Forexample,theworldwillloseitsculturaldiversitybecauseoftheinvasionandprevailingofoneculture,andsomecultureswillloseitsculturalidentitiesandpeculiarcharacteristics.Thus,it'sappropriateforustotakeabalancedattitudetowardsglobalization.
