Inthefirsteverstudyofitskind,UrsulaBeermannoftheUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley,andWillibaldRuchoftheUniversityofZurichstudied70psychologystudentstogauge(测量)theirabilitytolaughatthemselves.Thefindingssupportwhathaslongbeenbelieved:

thatbeingabletolaughatoneselfisnotonlyadistincttrait,butisalsolinkedwithhavinganoptimisticpersonalityandgoodmoodandmaybethefoundationforagoodsenseofhumor.

Participantsinthestudywereaskedtoratetheirabilitytoseethehumorintheirownplight.Theyalsodesignatedoneortwofriendstoratethemonthesamecharacteristic.

Whilethestudentswerefillingoutthesequestionnairesonaputer,itscamerasurreptitiouslyphotographedtheirfaces.ThepictureswerethenalteredusingMacPhotoBoothsoftwaretomakethemlooklikedistorted,funhousemirror(哈哈镜)images.

Afterward,thestudyparticipantswereaskedtorateirregularphotosofpeopletheydidn'tknow.Theirownstretchedoutimageswererandomlyinsertedintothesequence—andthat'swheretheexperimentreallystarted.Participantswerevideotapedastheyviewedtheimagestoseewhethertheylaughedorsmiledatthemselves.Thevideoswereanalyzed,usingawellstudiedratingsystemofemotionalexpression,toseehowgenuinetheparticipants'expressionsofhumorwere.

Eightypercentofparticipantsgenuinelysmiledorlaughedatleastoncewhenseeingtheirownsillyimage.However,thosewhoclaimedtohavetheabilitytolaughatthemselves—andwhosefriends'assessmentsmatchedtheirowngenuinelylaughedandsmiledmoreoftenandmoreintenselythantheothers.

Interestingly,however,people'ssenseoftheirownabilitytolaughatthemselveswasonlysomewhatrelatedwiththeirfriends'ratings,suggestingthatpeopleeitherthinkthey'rebetteratitthantheyactuallyareorthattheywanttopresentthemselvesthisway.

Thestudyfoundthatpeople'sabilitytolaughatthemselveshadnobearingonhowmuchtheylaughedorsmiledinresponsetothedistortedimagesofothers—thatsuggeststhatthephenomenonisadistinctcharacteristic,onelinkedwithyourownmoodandpersonality,ratherthanthetendencytosimplyfindsillyimagesfunny.Thefindingalsoemphasizesthelinkbetweenhumorandcautiousness.

Participantswhowereabletolaughatthemselvesmorealsotendedtobemorecheerfulandlessseriousoverall,andwereinbettermoodsonthedayoftheexperiment,thestudyfound.
