“Formoreandmorechildrenandyoungpeople,onlinecelebritiesandYouTubegaming‘vloggers’havetakentheplaceofTVandmoviestars,”thereportsaid.Socialmediaandgamingisthefourthmostpopularcareerchoiceforchildren,whilesinger/musicianandactor/actressfurtherdownthelistatninthandthirteenth.

Thesurveyfoundthat5%ofchildrenwhotookpartwantedtobeinthepolice,withthesameproportionplanningonbecomingdoctors.Agenderbreakdownshowsthetopjobchoiceforgirlswasteacher(19%),followedbyvet(11%)andsportswoman(9%),whileforboysitwassportsman(34%)followedbysocialmediaandgaming(9%)andpolice(8%).
Thishighlightsthepressingneedforclosertiesbetweenemployersandschools,tomakesurethatallchildrenhaveaccesstorolemodelsinawiderangeofsectorstohelpthemdevelopanawarenessofcareeroptionsatanearlyage.“Thisisimportanttoensurethatallchildren—regardlessofgenderandbackgrounds—canfulfilltheirfullpotential.”
