ThesensorscosttwoUScentseachtomake.Knownas"paper-basedelectricalgassensors(PEGS)",theydetectspoilagegaseslikeammonia(apoisonousgaswithastrongunpleasantsmell)inmeatandfishproducts.Theinformationprovidedbytheelectronicnoseisreceivedbyasmartphone,andthenyoucanknowwhetherthefoodisfreshandsafetoeat.

TheImperialCollegeLondonresearcherswhodevelopedPEGSmadethesensorsbyprintingcarbonelectrodes(电极)ontoaspecialtypeofpaper.Thematerialsareeco-friendlyandharmless,sotheydon'tdamagetheenvironmentandaresafetouseinfoodpackaging.Thesensors,combinedwithatinyelectronicsystem,theninformnearbymobiledevices,whichidentifyandunderstandthedataaboutspoilagegases.

LeadauthorDrFiratGuder,ofImperial'sDepartmentofBioengineering,said,"Althoughthey'redesignedtokeepussafe,use-bydatescanleadtoeatablefoodbeingthrownaway.Theydon'talwaysreflectitsactualfreshness.Infact,peopleoftengetsickfromfoodbornediseasesduetopoorstorage,evenwhenanitemiswithinitsuse-bydate.
