No.Thebookisinnowayintendedasadetailedguidetoself-representation.Itis,however,intendedtoempowercriminaldefendantsbyhelpingthemunderstandeveryphaseofthecriminaljusticeprocessandwhattypesofdefensesandstrategiesareavailabletothem.
Exceptforthosewhoarechargedwithveryminoroffenses,defendantsalmostalwayswillbenefitfromtheadviceandcounselofattorneysknowledgeableaboutthelawandtheinsandoutsofthecourtwherethecasewillbeheard.Thebasicreasonswhyself-representationisusuallynotadvisableincriminalcasesinclude:
·Incriminalcases,defendantsareupagainstthepowerandresourcesofthegovernment.Individualdefendantsarenomatchforthepoliceofficersandprosecutorswhoworkinthesystemeveryday.
·Thestakesareoftenhighincriminalcases.Aconvictionmayentailastifffine,imprisonment,lossofemploymentandotherpenalties,suchasdeportation(ofanoncitizen)andthelossoftherighttovoteandpossessafirearm.

Mostcriminalprosecutionstakeplaceinstatecourts.Thechartbelowhighlightssomeofthekeydifferencesbetweenstateandfederalcriminalsystems.
