EnglishspeakingiscommonlyconsideredastheweakpartofChineseEnglishlearners.Takecollegestudentsforexample,theymaybegoodatEnglishreading,orEnglishwriting,someofthemevengotveryhighmarksindifferentkindsofEnglishtests.ButwhentheyareaskedtospeakinEnglish,mostofthemtendtochickenoutandkeepsilence.ThisisabigprobleminEnglishlearningandtheproblemstartstodrawsmoreandmoreattentionnowadays.Bothteachersandstudentsareeagertoknowthetruereasonbehinditandtheytrytheirbesttofigureoutthesolutiontothisproblem.Thepurposeofthisresearchisanalyzethisphenomenon,givesomeadvicesandsuggestions,thereforetohelpcollegestudentstoimprovetheirEnglishspeakingskills,thattheyneedthemost.

Inordertocompletethistask,Iinterviewedsomeofmyclassmatestogetthewholepictureofthismatter.Ialsosentoutquestionnairetomanypeopleandgetquiteafewfeedbacks.Therearesomecommonproblemsexistingamongordinarystudents,whilesomeothersproblemsaremoreuniqueandpersonal.Afterdoingmyresearch,I’vecometoaconclusionthatwedidsomethingwronginlearningEnglish.Thetraditionalteachingandlearningmethodarenotsuitableformostus.Weneedachange,rightnow!

III.Importanceoftheresearch

Asweknow,ChinesecollegestudentsputsomuchtimeandeffortinlearningEnglish.Yettheresultisnotsosatisfactory.Why?

Andwhatshouldtheydotomakethingsright?

Weneedtodoresearchandfindout.That’sthereasonwhyIcomeupwiththisresearchandreport.IjustwanttohelpthosewhodesiretoacquireEnglishandtriedsohardinthelearningpath.Ihopethattheresearchwillgivethemtheguidancetheyneed,helpthemtofindthesuitablemethodtolearnandeventuallymakeabigprogressintheirspokenEnglish.

IV.Outlineoftheresearch

1、SituationofcollegeEnglishspeakingteachinginChina.

InChinathereisaspecialpolicyinhigheducationalinstitute,thatisonlyhadpassedtheCET4(shortforCollegeEnglishTestbandfour),studentscanhavetheirdiploma.Inthiscase,studentsputalotofeffortinlearningEnglish,doalotofexercises.HoweversincetheCET4isawrittentest,studentsmainlyfightforgrammar,reading,andwriting.Andtheypaylittleattentiontotheirspeakingability.SomeofthemevensimplyignorespeakingEnglishandkeeptheirmouthshutallthetime.Inthisway,thetest-orientedlearningmethodleadstheresultofhighmarkswithpoorskills.Peopleusuallycallthismethodas“dumbEnglishmethod”.Somanystudentsbecomethevictimsofthispoormethod.

2.ProblemsinlearningEnglishspeakingforcollegestudents.

ThereareseveralproblemsthatcollegestudentsusuallyhaveinlearningEnglishspeaking:

thebasicEnglishlevelispoor,betooshytospeak,lackofgoodenvironmenttospeak,andScarcityofculturalbackgroundknowledge.

2.1ThebasicEnglishlevelispoor.

Collegestudentsusuallysticktothearticlesassignedbytheirteachersinclass.Theydon’tdomuchreadingoutofclasses,sotheirvocabularyislimited.WhentheywanttoexpressthemselvesinEnglish,theysimplycan’tfindrightwordstospeak.Andsomewordstheytrytouseareveryformal.IfsuchwordsareusedinwrittenEnglishwillbejustfine,butinspokenEnglishthatwillbeweird.Pronunciationisanotherproblem.Whentheyspeak,peopledon’tunderstandduetothedialectoraccent.Soit’shardforthemtocommunicatewithotherpeople.

2.2Mostcollegestudentsareshytospeak.

Chinesestudentsareshybynature.Theyarebroughtuptobemodestandkeepthingstothemselves.Somoststudentsevendarenottospeaknativelanguageinfrontoflotpeople,letalonespeakEnglishinpublic.Thereasonisthattheyareafraidofmakingmistakes,losingface,orthinkotherpeoplewilllaughatthem.Thelesstheyspeak,theworsetheyspeak.Soit’slikeaviciouscircle.Graduallytheygiveuptrying.That’stoobad.

2.3Mostcollegestudentsdon’thaveagoodenvironmenttopracticeEnglishspeaking.

AlthoughtheInternetallowsthecollegestudentshavemorechancetoexposetoEnglish,theystillneedgoodenvironmenttopractice.WhentheyinaallChineseenvironment,theytendtospeakChineseallthetime.TheyspeakEnglishonlyinanoralEnglishclass.Andthatisnotenough.Everybodyknowsthatpracticemakesperfect,butnoteveryonehasthepatience.PracticingEnglishisalongandtimeconsumingprocess.Studentscan’tdoitjustnowandthen.TheyhavetopracticeEnglisheverysingleday,justlikethewaytheyspeakChinese.

2.4Scarcityofculturalbackgroundknowledge.

Cultureandlanguageareinseparable.Studentscan’thaveonewithouttheother.Theyhavetounderstandthebigdifferencebetweeneastandwestculture,whilewelearnEngl
