Rayraceddowntothechangingroomtotalktotheteam.Elevencupsofteawerewaitingfortheplayers.Theteamjoggedin,lookingtiredbuthappy.

“Welldone,lads,”smiledRay.“Youmustbethirsty.Drinkyourteawhileit‟shot.”

“Inaminute,boss.”saidStevethecaptain.

ThenRaynoticedoneplayerafteranothertakingtheircupsofteaintotheshowerroom.Whentheycamebackthecupswereempty.

“That‟sfunny,”thoughtRay.“Drinkingteaintheshower.”

Stevethecaptainpickeduphiscup.Rayfollowedhim.IntheshowerroomStevewaspouringhisteadownthesink.

“What‟sgoingon?

”saidRay.

Steveleapedintheairanddroppedhiscup.Thesoundofsmashingcup

broughttheotherplayersrunning.

“Itwashisfault,”sobbedSteve.“Hemademejump.”

“Whatshallwedo?

”moanedNickthegoalkeeper.

“Maybewecanglueit.”saidSteve.

“Willsomebodytellmewhat‟sgoingon?

”saidRay.“Whyareyoualltrippingyourteadownthesink?

”Nobodyspoke.

“Well?

“Whyallthefussaboutabrokencup?

“Hilda,”whisperedsomebody.

“Shemakesthetea,‟hissedNick.

„ThenIshallgoandtellheraboutthattheteaisnotverynice.‟

Theteastandwasanoldcaravan.Rayjoinedaquietqueueoffans.

Thenextmaninthequeuealreadyhadacupoftea,„Excuseme,‟hesaidpolitely.

Thecaravanbegantotremble.Thecaravanrockedandshook.Therewasagreatbangandthedoorflewoffitshinges.

ThereintheholewherethedoorhadbeenstoodHilda.Sheworeagreenskirt,anapron,redbootsandajumperthatsaid,„SmalltownF.C.‟

„Hilda,‟gaspedRay.

Hildasteppeddownfromthecaravan,rollinguphersleeves.

Shestrodeovertotheman.

„DoyouknowwhatIdowithgreatmoaningminnieswhocomecomplainingaboutmytea?

‟„I-Idon‟tknow,‟stammeredtheman.

„Idothis,‟saidHilda.

Hildagrabbedthemanandthrewhimoverhershoulder.Shemarcheddowntowardsthepitch.„Help!

‟criedtheman.

Hildastrodeintothegoalarea.

Sheliftedthemanoverherheadandsathimonthecrossbar.

„Getmedown,‟yelledtheman.

Hildamarchedbacktoherteastand.

Agroupoffanshelpedthemandownfromthegoalpost.

„Excuseme,‟Rayaskedthem.„Butiftheteaissohorrible,whydoyoubuyit?

Oneofthefanslookeduptowardstheteastand.„It‟sok,‟hesaid.„She‟slookingtheotherway.‟„Ifyoudon‟tbuyacupoftea,‟whisperedanother,„Shecomesoutandmakesyoudrinktwocups.‟„So,‟saidanother,„it‟ssafertobuyacupandtipitaway.‟

Raylookedaround.Allovertheterraceswerepuddlesoftea.

„She‟llhavetogo,‟saidRaytohimself.

Raywalkedbacktothechangingroom.Theplayershadjustlefttostartthesecondhalf.Insteadofwatchingthegame,Raypacedupanddown.

Thegameendedina3-1winforSmalltownF.C.Astheplayerstrottedintothechangingroom,Raypattedthemontheback.

„Right,‟hesaidbravely.„I‟mofftoseeHilda.‟

Theplayerscrowedintotheshowerroom.Nick,thegoalkeeper,climbeduponSteve‟sshoulders.Helookedoutofthewindow.

„What‟sgoingon?

‟askedtheothers.

„He‟sreachedtheteastand.‟

„Yes.‟

„He‟stalkingtoHilda.Ohno!

He‟sonhiswayback.‟

Theplayersracedoutoftheshowerroom,leavingNickhangingontothewindowledge.

„Oi,lads,‟yelledNick.„Getmedown!

Thechangingroomdooropened.InstaggeredRay,withateaurnrammedonhishead.

„Youtoldher,then,‟saidSteve,ashepulledtheurnoff.

2ThechangingroomdoorflewopenandHildamarchedin.„Wheredoyouthinkyouaregoingwithmyteaurn?

‟Justthentherewasaterrificcrashfromtheshowerroom.

Everybodyracedintotheshowerroom.

Nickwaslyingonthefloor.

„Ifell,‟hemoaned.„Mylegreallyhurts.‟

„Hewon‟tbeabletoplaynextweek,‟saidStevesadly.

„That‟sthecupgameagainstCity,‟saidHilda.

„ThatisallIneed,‟groanedRay„Agoalkeeperwhocan‟tmakesavesandatealadywhocan‟tmaketea.‟„Whatdidyousay?

‟roaredHilda.

Thechangingroomfellsilent.

„I```‟beganRay.

Suddenly,Hildagaveagreatsob.

„DoyouthinkIdon‟tknowwhatgoeson?

‟shesighed.„I‟veseenpeopletippingtheirteaaway.I‟vetriedsohardtomakeanicecupoftea.Italwaysgoeswrong.‟

ThenHildapulledherapronoverherheadandcried.TheplayershadneverseenHildacry.Itwasmorefrighteningthananyofhertempers.

RayputhisarmaroundHilda‟sshoulder.

„I‟msorry,‟hesaid.„Ishouldneverhavesaidanythingaboutyourtea.‟

„Butit‟strue,‟wailedHilda.

„WhatcanIdotomakeituptoyou?

‟askedRay.

Hildaslowlylettheapronfall.Alittlesmilecreptacrossherface.„YoucouldletmeplayingoalonSaturday.‟„Impossible,‟saidRay.

„Butthere‟snooneelse,‟saidSteve.

„I‟llthinkaboutit,‟saidRay.

„Thinkaboutit,‟sniffedHilda.„IfIdon‟tplayonSaturday,twothingswillhappen.One,wewillloseagainstCitybecausewehaven‟tgotagoalkeeper.‟

„Andtheother?

„Ishallstuffyoubackinthatteaurnfornotlettingmeplay.‟

„Gentlemen,‟saidRay.„MayIintroduceHilda,ournewgoalie.‟

Thetwoteamsracedontothepitchtoagreatroarfromthecrowd.HildastrodetowardsthegoalattheCityfan‟send.

Someoneinthecrowdyelled,„That‟snotapropergoalkeeper.It‟sthetealady!

SlowlyHildaturned.

„Whosaidthat?

‟shegrowled.

Thecrowdfellsilent.

„Iaskedwhospoke?

Shepointedintothecrowd.

„Itwasyou.Comehere.‟

Nervously,amanwearingalongCityscarfcametothefrontofthecrowd.

„Right,yousquirt,‟snarledHilda.„Yousithere,bythegoal,whereIcankeepaneyeonyou.AsfortherestofyouCityfans,youmaycheeryourteam,butnorudecommentsaboutme.Gotit?

„Yes,Hilda,‟chantedtheCityfans.

Thegamebegan.Almostatonce,Citywereontheattack.Thecentreforwardbrokethroughandrushedtowardsthegoal.HewasabouttoshootwhenhesawHildarunningathim.

„Yaar!

‟screamedHilda.

Theplayerwassoshockedthathekickedtheballoverthebarandintothecrowd.TheCityfansgroaned.

3„Ballplease,‟snappedHilda.

Hildabootedtheballupthepitch.

Byhalf-timeneitherteamhadscored.

„Wellplayed,everybody,‟smiledRay.Ashewentroundtalkingtotheplayers,henoticedsomethingodd.Everyonewashappilydrinkingtheirtea.

Thesecondhalfdraggedandnobodylookedlikescoring.

Hildalookedatherwatch.Itwasnearlytime.Sheturnedtothefansbehindher.

„Whathappensifit‟sadraw?

‟sheasked.

„Youhavetoplayhalfanhour‟sextratime,‟shoutedsomeone.

„Anotherhalfanhourofstandingaroundinthecold?

‟saidHilda.„Blowthat.‟

Shemarchedupthepitch.ACityplayerhadtheball.Hildachargedtowardshim.HewassosurprisedthathepassedtheballtoHildainsteadofhisownteam.

Hildasteamedupthepitch,yelling,„Iwantthisgamefinished.Outofmyway.‟

Andthatiswhatalltheplayersdid.Hildascored.

TherefereeblewthefinalwhistleandtheSmalltownteamcarriedHildaroundontheirshoulders.Theylethercollectthecup.

„IfyouallloveHilda,clapyourhands,‟chantedsomeoneinthecrowd.Thegroundshookwiththesoundofthefansclapping.

„Listentothat,‟shoutedSteve.„Theyloveyou.‟

„You‟reright,‟sniffedHilda.„Theydo.Nowlet‟sfillthiscupwithtea.‟

„Hangon,‟criedNick.Helimpedontothepitchpushingatrolley.Therewasaslightlydentedurnonthetrolley.Hepouredtheteaintothecup.Alltheplayerstookagreatgulpofdelicioustea.

„Soitwasyouwhomadethetea,‟saidSteve.

ThesimpleendtothisstorywouldbethatNickwentonmakingtheteaandHildaplayedingoal.ButassoonasNick‟slegwasbetterhetoldRaythathewantedtoplayagain.

„That‟sgreat,‟saidRay.

„WhataboutHilda?

‟saidNick.

„Leavethattome,‟saidRaywithasmile.

Hildawastryingtofixthedoorbackonthecaravan.

„Canyoustopforaminute?

‟saidRay.

Hildaputdownhertools.

„I‟dliketothankyouforplayingingoal,‟hebegan.

„ButNick‟slegisbetterandyoudon‟twantmeingoalanymore,‟saidHilda.

„HowdidyouknowwhatIwasgoingtosay?

„I‟mnotdraft,‟saidHilda,dabbinghereyeswithahankie.

„There‟ssomethingelse,‟saidRay.„Iwanttheclubtolookmoremodern.SoI‟mgettingridofthisoldcaravan.‟„Oh,‟sniffedHilda.„Soyoudon‟twantmeatall.‟

„Yes,Ido,‟smiledRay.„Soyoudoallthefansandtheteam.That‟swhyI‟mgoingtoputyouinchargeofabrandnewautomaticteamachine.‟

„Doyoumean,‟saidHilda,„thatIwon‟teverhavetomaketeaagain?

„Yes,‟saidRay.
