BackgroundInformation

I.Author

MichaelWelzenbach(1954—2001)wasanartcriticaswellasapoetandnovelist.HewrotesomeofthemoststimulatingcriticismsofartandmusicfortheWashingtonPost.

II.RobinHood

RobinHoodisalegendaryheroofaseriesofEnglishballads,someofwhichdatefromatleastthe14thcentury.Hewasarebel,andmanyofthemoststrikingepisodesinthetalesabouthimshowhimandhiscompanionsrobbingandkillingrepresentativesofauthorityandgivingthegainstothepoor.TheirmostfrequentenemywastheSheriffofNottingham,alocalagentofthecentralgovernment.Othersincludedwealthyecclesiasticallandowners

Robintreatedwomen,thepoor,andpeopleofhumblestatuswithcourtesy.Agooddealoftheimpetusagainstauthoritystemsfromtherestrictionofhuntingrights.Theearlyballads,especially,revealthecrueltythatwasaninescapablepartofmedievallife.

TheauthenticRobinHoodballadswerethepoeticexpressionofpopularaspirationsinthenorthofEnglandduringaturbulenteraofbaronialrebellionsandagrariandiscontent,whichculminatedinthepeasants’Revoltof1381.RobinHoodwasapeople’sheroasKingArthurwasanoble’s.

III.Berkshire

SituatedintheheartofsouthernEngland,theCountyofBerkshire,alsoknownas"RoyalBerkshire"ishometoseveralwell-knowntownsandcities,suchasWindsor,wherethefamousroyalretreatWindsorCastlecanbefound.AnotherroyalconnectionistheTownofAscot,famousforitsverypopularannualhorseracingfestival—"RoyalAscot".BerkshirealsoboastsmanypicturesquevillageswithviewsacrosstheRiverThamesabsolutelystunning.

IV.RuralLifeinBritain

Cottages:

Picturesquecottagesaremostpeople’sideaofthetypicalcountrybuilding.Cottagesdatingfromthelate16thcenturyaregenerallytheearliesttosurvive.

AllmannerofmaterialswereusedtobuildEngland’scountrycottages:

stone,slate,wood,flint,clay,cob,thatch,bouldersandpebbles,andturf.Whatevermaterialwasused,traditionallythiswouldhavereflectedwhatwaslocallyavailable.

Whilstcolorfulflowers,alwaysimportanttothecottagedweller,werehaphazardintheirplanting,vegetablesweregrowninorderedrows.Ediblesweregrown,notonlyforthecottagers’owntablebutalsotobesoldasameansofsupplementingtheirincome.Thegardenwasnotsolelyinhabitedbyplants,forthekeepingofbees,andsometimespigs,whichwasonceacommonsightinthecottagegarden.Thecottagegardenprovidedtheopportunityfortheannualvillageshowtodevelop,witheverykeengardenerhopinghisproducewouldscoopthetopprize.
