3Justthinkofthehardshipsheandherhusbandwentthroughinthosehundredsofdaysinadampshedwhentheytriedtoextractpureuranium.MadameCuriehadtobearboththeendlessobsessionsofstrictworkingstyleandseriousattitudeandtheexcessiveheavyworkwhichevenastrongmanwouldfindhardlypossibletoendure.SuchwashermentalandphysicalburdenthatMr.Curiehadsighedandsaid.“Thelifewe’vechosenisreallytoohard.”WhentheNobelPrizeforPhysicswasawardedtoPierreandMarieCuriein1903,thegreathonorquicklychangedtheirlives.SorbonneUniversityfoundfundsforalaboratoryandMarieCuriewashiredas“laboratorychief”.

4Unfortunately,in1906Mr.Curiewaskilledinatrafficaccident.“Itisimpossibleformetoexpresstheprofoundnessofthecrisisbroughtintomylifebythelossoftheonewhohadbeenmyclosestcompanion,”MadamCuriesaidsadly.Crushedbytheblow,shedidnotfeelabletofacethefuture.Shecouldnotforget,however:
