Whydidhechoosetoignoretheintelligenceandargueinsteadthatthewarwasnecessary,preciselybecauseofthethreatposedbyinternationalterrorism?
TherehavebeentwoparliamentaryinvestigationsintothiswarandtheHuttoninquiryreopenstomorrow.Intheirdifferentwaystheyhavebeenilluminating,butnoneofthemhasaddressedthemainissuesrelatingtothewar.TheForeignAffairsCommitteehadthescopetorangewidely,butchosetobecomeentangledinthedisputebetweentheGovernmentandtheBBC.TheIntelligenceCommitteereachedtheconclusionthattheGovernment'sfileonSaddam'sweaponswasnotmixedup,butfailedtoexplainwhytheintelligencewassohopelesslywrong.TheHuttoninquiryisinvestigatingthedeathofDr.DavidKelly,apersonaltragedyofmarginalrelevancetothewaragainstIraq.
