TobroadentheirvotingappealinthePresidentialelectionof1796,theFederalistsselectedThomasPinckney,aleadingSouthCarolinian,asrunningmatefortheNewEnglanderJohnAdams.ButPinckney’sSouthernfriendschosetoignoretheirparty’sintentionsandregardedPinckneyasaPresidentialcandidate,creatingapoliticalsituationthatAlexanderHamiltonwasdeterminedtoexploit.HamiltonhadlongbeenwaryofAdams’stubbornlyindependentbrandofpoliticsandpreferredtoseehisrunningmate,overwhomhecouldexertmorecontrol,inthePresident’schair.
TheelectionwasheldunderthesystemoriginallyestablishedbytheConstitution.Atthattimetherewasbutasingletally,withthecandidatereceivingthelargestnumberofelectoralvotesdeclaredPresidentandthecandidatewiththesecondlargestnumberdeclaredVice-President.HamiltonanticipatedthatalltheFederalistsintheNorthwouldvoteforAdamsandPinckneyequallyinanattempttoensurethatJeffersonwouldnotbeeitherfirstorsecondinthevoting.PinckneywouldbesolidlysupportedintheSouthwhileAdamswouldnot.HamiltonconcludedifitwerepossibletodivertafewelectoralvotesfromAdamstoPinckney,PinckneywouldreceivemorethanAdams,yetbothFederalistswouldoutpollJefferson.
