Sweden’spublictransportsystemhasalreadybeencashlessforseveralyears,afterlocalpublictransportworkerscomplainedthathandlingcashhadbecomedangerous.“BusdriversweregettingattackedfortheirmoneysoSwedenbannedcashonpublictransport,”saysArnArvidsson,thepresidentofCashless,anorganizationsupportingthemovetoacash-freesociety.“Therewerealsoanumberofbankrobberies,sofouryearsago,thebanksbegantomoveawayfromcash.Now,allofSweden’sbigbanksoperatecashfreewhereverpossible,andthenumberofbankrobberiesisata30-yearlow.”

Thereis,however,concernabouthowwellSweden’s1.8millionpensioners---outofatotalpopulationof10million---willadapt.“Alotofelderlypeoplefeelexcluded,”saysJohannaHallenoftheSwedishNationalPensioners’Organization.“Only50%ofolderpeopleusecashcardsregularlyand7%neverusecashcards.Sowewantthegovernmenttotakethingsslowly.”
