WheninTokyo,he penned twonotesinGerman.Oneofthem, written onapieceofplainpaper,said,“Wherethere’sawill,there’saway.”

WhydidEinsteinwritethenotes?

SomebelievetheyweretoexpressEinstein’sdelightatthereceptionhereceivedfromthepeopleofJapanwhocrowdedtoattendthelaureate’s(获奖者)lectures.Othersthinktheywerespeciallywrittenforabellboywhocametodeliveramessage,eitherbecausethescientistdidnothaveloosechangetotiphim,orbecausethemessengerrefusedtoaccepttips.Regardlessofthereason,Einstein purportedly toldthe bellboy,“Maybeifyouarelucky,thosenoteswillbecomemuchmorevaluablethanjustaregulartip.”Hewasright!

Earlierthisyear,thebellboy’snephewdecidedtopartwiththelettersandhandedthemtoWinner’sAuctionsandExhibitions.The“theoryofhappiness”broughttheowneran astonishing $1.56millionfromaEuropeanbuyer.Thesecond note,whichopenedat$1,000,andexpectedtofetchamaximumof$6,000,soldfor$240,000!
