LauraElizabethIngallswasbornonFebruary7,1867,inalittleloghouseintheBigWoodsofWisconsin.Laura'schildhoodwasspenttravelingwestbycoveredwagon,toIndianTerritoryinKansas,toGrasshopperCountryinMinnesota,andthentoDakotaTerritory,whereshemetandmarriedAlmanzoWilder.

Laura'sdaughterRosegrewuplisteningtohermother'sstoriesofthosepioneerdays.Sheurgedhermothertowritethemdownsothatotherchildrencouldenjoythem,aswell.Sointhe1930sand40s,Laurarecordedhermemoriesofthosedaysoflongagoinachildren'sseriesknownasthe"LittleHouse"®books.

AlthoughLauradiedonFebruary10,1957,atherhomeintheOzarksofMissouri,sheandherfamilywillliveforeverintheheartsofherreaders.

Laura's"LittleHouse"Books

Laura'sdaughterRosebecameafamouswriterintheearly1900s.Roserecalledthestorieshermotherhadtoldherduringhergrowing-upyears,andthoughtthatotherchildrenwouldbeasinterestedinthosepioneerstoriesasshewas.Sheencouragedhermothertowritedownthestories,andLauradid.Thefirstmanuscriptofwhatwouldeventuallybecomethe"LittleHouse"bookswascalledPioneerGirl,andtoldofLaura'sentirechildhood,untilshemarriedAlmanzoWilder.Thismanuscriptwasrejectedbyeditors,andhasneverbeenpublished.

Laurathenreworkedapartofhermanuscriptintoapicturebookforchildren,calledWhenGrandmawasaLittleGirl.ThisbookfocusedonthestoriesPahadtoldLauraandMarywhentheywereverylittlegirlsintheBigWoods.Thisbookwasgraduallyexpandedintoitspresentform,andpublishedunderthetitleofLittleHouseintheBigWoodsin1932.

Overthenextdecade,Lauracontinuedherstorybookbybook,untilin1943,youngLaurawasmarriedinTheseHappyGoldenYears.Thisbookcompletedthe"LittleHouse"series.

Overthenextfewyears,Laura'sbooksweretranslatedintoanumberoflanguages,andtheygainedpopularityallovertheworld.Inthe1970sandearly80s,MichaelLandon'stelevisionseriesLittleHouseonthePrairiemadeLaura'snameevenmorewell-known.

Laura'sbookstellthestoryofthegreathardshipsinvolvedinsettlingtheAmericanMid-Westinthecontextofherwarmandlovingfamily.TheIngallsfamilymadethemostofthemanysetbackstheyexperiencedandfoundrealjoyintheirsmallvictories.Thehonestyanddetailofthebooksmakestheminterestinghistoricalandsocialdocumentsoftheperiod,aswellasentertainingreading.The"LittleHouse"bookshaveattractedinterestfromscholarssincetheyrepresentarareexampleofpioneerliteraturewrittenfromachild'sperspective.

LaterBooks

Laura'sseriesforchildrenendedwithTheseHappyGoldenYears,butLauraalsowroteamanuscriptnarratingthefirstfouryearsofhermarriedlife.Itisnotcertainwhenthisbookwaswritten,butmanyscholarsbelieveLaurawroteitaboutthesametimeashersecond"LittleHouse"book,FarmerBoy,asabookforadults.Thebookwaspublishedin1971asTheFirstFourYears.

In1894,Laura,Almanzo,andRosemovedfromDeSmet,SouthDakota,toMansfield,Missouri.Laurakeptadiaryoftheirtrip,andin1962,RoseaddedinformationfromherownmemoryandpublishedthediaryasOntheWayHome.

In1915,LaurawenttoSanFranciscotovisitRoseandtoattendtheWorld'sFair.ShewrotefrequentandlengthyletterstoAlmanzoduringherstay,andtheseletterswerepublishedasWestFromHomein1974.
