Abstract

Thepresentstudypresentsadetailedreportofaprojectimplementedtosolvetheproblemthatmostofmystudentscan'trememberthenewwords.Itishypothesizedthatlearners'memorywillbegreatlyincreasedbyabetterorganizationinthisrespect.Thishypothesisisverifiedbyafour-weekpractiseofwell-organizedactivities.

Amongthemethodsofscientificinvestigationusedareanalyticmethod,causeanalysis,interviewandbrainstorming.

Problemidentification:

First,Iidentifyaproblembasedonmyteachingexperience.Thatis:

AlthoughIspendmuchtimeteachingthestudentstolearnEnglish,andalthoughIusemanymethodstomakethemshowinterestinEnglish,someofthemjustshowalittleinterestinit.

Iexaminedmyproblemscientificallytoseewhetheritisresearchable.Idiscussedandagreedontheproblemwiththetuthor.Atthesametime,Iworkedoutthetimetableofmyproject.(toSeeAppendix).

Second,Iusedseveralmethodsofproblemanalysistoanalyzetheproblem.(toseeAppendix)Theyaretheanalyticmethod,causeanalysis,interviewandbrainstorming.Throughtheproblemanalysis,Ihavemadeupmymindtosolvetheproblem.

Toteachstudentshowtoremembernewwords.

2.Projecthypothesis

ItishypothesizedthatstudentswilllearnnewwordsbyheartifIcanguidetheclasstoremembernewwords.

3.Projectrationale

1)Theroleofspeakinginclassanditspurpose-Iwouldliketogivethepurposeofcommunication,makingitclosetoreal-life.Thismeansthatthestudentsshouldfeelrelaxedandfreeinclass.Theyshouldalsoseethatspeakingtotheirpeershasapurposeanddoesnothavetobeevaluatedbytheteacherallthetime.Theemphasisshouldshiftfromaccuracytofluency.

2)Theroleofthestudents-Iwouldlikethestudentstofeelthatlearningisnotacompetitiveone,butacollaborativeendeavour.Theyshouldcometorealizethattheycanlearnfromeachotherandhelpeachother,especiallyinspeakingasitisnotaskilltheycanpracticeontheirown.

3)Theroleoftheteacher-Studentsshouldrealizethattheteacherhasmanyrolesintheclassroom,notjustthatofevaluator,Iwouldliketodemonstratethesedifferentrolessothatstudentsrealizewhentheteachertasksamajorinstructionalroleinclassandwhenshetakesonlyaminorhelpingrole.Iwouldlikestudentstogetusedtobeingresponsiblefortheirownlearningandnotdependingontheteacherallthetime.

4)Thetypesofclasstasksused-Ithinkalloftheabovecanbedealtwithbydesigningandusingappropriatetasksinthelesson.Ifstudentshavetodoinformation-gaptasks,whichrequirethemtogaininformationfromtheirpartnerbymeansofquestioningandlisteningandtogiveinformationtotheirpartnerbylisteningandrespondingadequatelytoquestions,Ifeeltheycanbeshownthevalueofcommunicatingwiththeirpeers.

4.NewWordsDesign

Idesignedanadequateamountofactivitiestotestthehypothesis.Iftheactivitiesofrememberingnewwordsarebetterdesigned,thestudentswilllearnEnglishhardandwell.

InmyprojectIdecidetoimprovemytechniquesofteachinghowtoremembernewwords.

Ihavedesignedfouractivitiestobetriedoutinfourweeks.Andtheseactivitiesarereportedasfollows.

Purpose:

Guidethestudentstorememberthesewords(runsorryjumpstopstandtimemesitsingdown)accordingtothepronunciation.

Instruction:

“PronunciationRules”method-Toremembernewwordsaccordingtopronunciation.Studentslistentotheteachercarefullyandthenlearnthenewwordsbyheartaccordingtothepronunciation.

Procedure:

Theteacherexplainshowtorememberthenewwordsaccordingtothepronunciation,andthenstudentsreadaftertheteacher.Studentsrememberthenewwordsinpairs.Thenasksomestudentstowritethemontheblackboard.

Teachthenewwordsbysentencestomakethestudentsrememberthemeasily.

Instruction:

“Makingsentences”method-Toremembernewwordsbymakingsentences.Theteacherteachesthenewwordsbysentencesandthenstudentsreadthenewwordsaftertheteacher,thenstudentsmakesentenceswiththesenewwordsandrememberthem.Finallycheckthenewwardsinpairs.

Purpose:

Guidestudentstorememberthewordsaccordingtowordstructures.

Instruction:

“WordForming”method-Toremembernewwordsaccordingtowordstructures,includingaddprefix,addsuffixorcompound.Theteachergivestheexamples(eg:

Purpose:

Instructions:

“PlayingGames”method–Toremembernewwordsbyplayinggames.Inclasstheteacherteachesthenewwords.Thenshowsthestudentshowtoplaygameswiththewords.Theteachergivesthewordcardstothestudents,thenSayaword(e.g:

last),thestudentswhohavetheword“last”cardstandinfrontofblackboardinorder.Thestudentloseswhoisthelast.Theteachertellsthestudentshe/shewillletthemplaygameslikethisinfrontoftheclassnextday.Theywilllearnthenewwordsbyheartaloneoringroupsafterclass.

5.Projectimplementation

Mystudentsareone-yearstudents.

Ittookmefourweekstoimplementmyproject.

Infourweeks,Iwanttoknowwhichclasswillwinintheexamination.Finally,thestudentsfromclass1whichhavebeentaughthowtorememberthenewwordsshowmoreinterestinEnglishthanthestudentsinClass3whohaven’tbeentaughthowtorememberthewords.ThescoreofClass1isalsohigherthanthatofClass3.Inclass1,thereare46studentssayingthatEnglishisveryeasyandinteresting,theyareinterestedinit,butinClass3,thereare24studentssayingthattheyareinterestedinEnglish.Afteranexamination,thescoreofClass1is89.5,whilethescoreofClass3is80.3.
