Brechtbeganwritingworksforthestagearoundthistime,whichwonsomewordsofpraise.HealsospenttimestudyingtheworkofpoliticaltheoristKarlMarxandsocialism.Hebegantoformhistheoryof“epictheater.”Thistheater,differentfromthetraditionalaimsofdramaasdescribedbyAristotle,wasnotmeanttobeanimitationofrealityorawaytoentertainpeople.

Epictheaterismeanttopresentanargumentandinvitetheaudiencetomakejudgmentsonit.Traditionalconventions,likenotlookingdirectlyattheaudience,areignored.Brechttriedtopreventaudiencesfromsympathizingwithhischaracters,andwantedthemtocareabouttheissuesbeingdiscussed.

In1927,BertoltBrechtbeganworkingwithacomposernamedKurtWeill.Togethertheywroteseveralplays,themostfamousofwhichbeingTheThreepennyOpera.Theplayopenedin1928andstarredWeill'swife,LotteLenya.Althoughthismusicaladaptationofan18thcenturyoperabyJohnGayinitiallywasattackedbycritics,itgrewinpopularityandwasperformedover400timesoverthenexttwoyears.

AsaMarxist,BertoltBrechtfledGermanyin1933becauseoftheNaziterrorandmovedaroundEurope.StillundertheshadowofAdolfHitler,BrechtleftEuropeforAmericain1941.Duringthistime,hewroteseveralplaysprotestingtheruleofHitler,includingMotherCourageandHerChildren,TheGoodPersonofSezuan,CaucasianChalkCircle,andTheMiseryoftheThirdReich.In1949BrechtmovedtoEastBerlin.Sevenyearslaterhediedfromaheartattack.
