Underthescaredthicktropicaltree
heliesflatasawoodenboard;
hiscomradesfalllike
choppedtrees
Whenheawakes
apairofwarmeyes
lookathimlovingly.
Riskingherlife,
ablack-hairedbeauty
saveshimfromthefierceonslaughter.
Whenthehandsomeman
returnssmilingtohispost,
heandshebecome
truelovers
thatmakeseven
thesingingbluemermaidsenvy.
Heisawhite;
andsheisaMalay-Chinese,
livinginanearbyvillage
setonstilts,
surroundedbybubblingandviolenttides,

fromanylivingsoul.

Watchingtheshipandheronlylove
vanishinginthesettingssun,
OutoftheGatetotheEast,
Rosesitsonahugerock,
facingthesea,
underthemoon,
motionlessly
forthreedaysandthreenights.
Then,
takingoffhersarong,
closinghereyesinpeace,
sheslowlywalksinto
theSouthChinaSea.
Herlastprayeris:

inPenang--thepearloftheOrient,
thereisagorgeouslady--
HernameisRose.
Sheiswhite,
beautiful,
young,
rich,
intelligent,
aCatholic.
Somanymenareafterher.
HerBritishparents
andherselfturndown
thewaveofsuitors
oneaftertheother.
Theday
herparentsholdahugeball
incelebrationofher
nineteenthbirthday,
celebritiesaroundthisisleoftemples,
evenfromfaraway,
aretheretoparticipate.
Suddenly,
Amonghundresofguests
LadyRosefindshim.
It'shim
sherecognizeshim
byinstinct:
“George,George.”
Shecriesandrushesforward.
Georgeknowstoothat
thisisRose.
Infrontofeverybody,
theyembrace
andenjoytheeternalexistence
inaninstant.
Georgeishandsome,

rich,
intelligent,

hecomesfromanoldfamily.
Butnooneishappyforthem.
SinceGeorgeissixtyyearsold,
hasfourchildren,
hecomeswithhisroyalbloodedwife,too.

sitontopofathicktree,
facingthesea,
underthemoon,
theirtearsrainingdown
forweeks.
