Generalinformation

Thegiantpandalivesinmountainousregions,suchasSichuanandTibet.Sincethelatterhalfofthe20thcentury,thepandahasbecomeaninformalnationalsymbolforChina,anditsimageisfoundonmanyChinesegoldcoins.

Despitebeingclassifiedasameat-eater,thepandahasadietthatisoverwhelminglydominatedbyvegetables.Thegiantpandaeatsshootsandleaves,livingalmostentirelyonbamboo.Pandasarealsoknowntoeateggs,theoccasionalfishandsomeinsectsalongwiththeirbamboodiet.Thesearenecessarysourcesofprotein.Somezoosalsofeedtheirpandasspeciallymadebiscuitsorothertreatstosupplementtheirbamboodiets.Likeothermammalsoftheregiontheycomefrom,thegiantpandadoesnotsleepallthewaythroughoutthewinter.

UnlikemanyotheranimalsinAncientChina,pandaswererarelythoughttohavemedicaluses.Theonlyconsideredmedicalusewasprobablyofpandawastes,tomeltneedlesaccidentallyswallowedinthethroat.Inthepast,pandaswerethoughttoberareandnoblecreatures;themotherofEmperorWenofHanwasburiedwithapandaboneinhergrave.EmperorTaizongofTangwassaidtohavegivenJapantwopandasandasheetofpandaskinasasignofgoodwill.Pandaskinwasconsideredasignofcourageafterwards,andthuspandasbecameatargetforillegalhunters.

ThoughtheSichuanWolongReservewassetupbytheChinesegovernmentin1958tosavethedecliningpandas,fewadvancesintheconservationofpandasweremade,duetoinexperienceandinsufficientknowledge.Manybelievedthatthebestwaytosavethepandaswastocagethem,andasaresult,thepandaswerecagedforanysignofdecline,andtheysufferedfromterribleconditions.Becauseofpollutionanddestructionoftheirnaturalenvironment,alongwithsegregationduetocaging,reproductionofwil
